Google has severed its ties with Huawei due to President Trump’s trade blacklist. Reuters has been told the Chinese telecommunications company would no longer be given access to Android updates or proprietary apps and services such as the Google Play Store, Gmail, and YouTube. Huawei will still have access to the open source version of Android (the Android Open Source Project), however.

This is a huge blow to Huawei, but the company has reportedly been working on software it can fall back on in case it was blocked from using Android. “Some of this technology is already being used in products sold in China, the company has said.”

But users of existing Huawei devices who have access to the Google Play Store will still be able to download app updates provided by Google. Apps such as Gmail are updated through the store, unlike operating system updates which are typically handled by phone manufacturers and telecoms carriers, which the blacklist could affect, the source said.
