Microsoft has announced that it has applied a compatibility hold that prevents devices with certain Ubisoft games installed from installing Windows 11 version 24H2 via the Windows Update release channel.

Interesting.

Is the expectation now that Microsoft will take responsibility for any old and ****ty software you may have installed on your PC and halt any compatibility breaking update?

That seems like kind of a tall order.
 
Bigger question, is there an blurb telling you what programs you have installed that are creating a compatibility lock?

"Old" Outlaws came out a month ago. Also yes, it is MS's responsibility to maintain reasonable compatibility when pushing updates.

Fair, but it is an "old" design.

Ubisoft should get their **** together and update their releases over time to be compatible with the latest OS Revisions.

They are starting to sound like Bethesda for crying out loud.

That said, there are literally millions of different software programs someone could have installed on their operating system.

Microsoft can't be expected to keep track of every piece of software's ****ty design decisions using obsolete and deprecated hooks etc. in to the OS and make sure things don't break when they push an update.

Things change over time. It is the software vendors responsibility to keep up with those changes.

One could convincingly argue that in the Internet age, where everything is always connected, it is a very bad idea to use any software that is not actively maintained, so such software should be considered EOL and unusable unless you are air gapped.
