NVIDIA Reportedly Reducing GeForce RTX 2060 Supply to Increase Production Capability for GeForce RTX 30 Series Graphics Cards

NVIDIA is presumably doing everything in its power to increase the availability of its GeForce RTX 30 Series graphics cards, which continue to sell out almost immediately at major retailers and remain tough to find for most enthusiasts. A report from China’s IT Home suggests that one of the ways that green team will try to improve availability is by reducing the supply of the GeForce RTX 2060 graphics cards that it reintroduced earlier this year in its initial attempt at alleviating shortages sparked by the cryptomining craze. According to an internal notice, the production capacity of these Turing-based GPUs will be transferred over to the GeForce RTX 30 Series...

Not a bad idea if it's to bolster the 3070 series maybe. We've got enough high priced GPU's out there so they don't need to waste this on a new batch of 3080 Ti's.

Trying to figure out how cutting 2060 production increases 3000 series capacity. I guess if you are constrained on the PCB or auxiliary components (VRMs, VRAM, etc). Otherwise it's a 12nm chip, with GDDR6 VRAM. There are some 3000 cards that do use GDDR6 (only the 3070Ti/80/80Ti/90 use GDDR6X)

Naa this makes sense if parts availability to make the cards isn't the constraint any longer. This points to a previous chip/part availability constraint that has been lifted, so production lines that were idle until they reintroduced the 2060 can now be re jigged to produce 3000x series cards.

What parts became available will directly correlate to what Nvidia produces of course. (That and profit margin because whatever cards they shove out the door will be purchased.).

I imagine though that they are taking a small hit to the pocket book to make 3000 series cards over the 2060's. Considering how mature the parts were for the 2060's profit per unit was probably higher.

With the way the market has been, I thought they quit making 2060's months ago.

This seems typical with Nvidia when the next gen hits, kill the last gen so everyone focuses on the new stuff.

There is some stock around here, but I assume that has more to do with the shops asking scalper like prices.

I hope they get stuck with their inventory until prices get near Msrp again.
