PCI-SIG, the consortium behind the ubiquitous PCI technology, has announced the formation of a new PCI-SIG Optical Workgroup that aims to deliver PCIe technology over optical connections. The new optical interconnect is expected to usher in a number of major benefits, including higher performance, lower power consumption, and reduced latency, according to some researchers. The PCIe 7.0 specification, which promises a 128 GT/s raw bitrate and up to 512 GB/s bi-directionally via x16 configuration, is targeted for member release in 2025.
