The world is beginning to adjust to a “new normal.” Different industries are beginning to reopen. We are hearing stirrings of things coming back. CES 2020 was one of the last large-scale events of 2020 before the many cancellations that occurred afterward. While some events eventually were rescheduled as online events, such as NVIDIA’s GTC 2020 Keynote and Sony’s upcoming PlayStation 5 event, others were not able to adjust and make a comeback. Well, CES 2021 is on the books now, and its organizers are beginning to unveil plans to make it happen. So far, it has been planned for January 6-9, 2021, as an in-person event.

I'm all for it being an in person event maintaining social distancing, providing masks and gloves to the attendees. Having staggered cleaning stations as well as refreshment stations. It can be done well and it can be done right.

The main show floors are an absolute zoo. There are so many exhibits packed in along with people that I don't see how social distancing is going to happen. Perhaps the brands won't do their major announcements in their booth - I couldn't get around the Samsung booth at one point because that whole area was wall to wall people.

Now, the off-floor stuff, like visiting the suites that the manufactures set up, those would be very easy to do the social distancing thing and is exactly where I would want to spend more time if I went again this year. There's only so much you can do on the show floor from a PC hardware perspective, though, the wandering the halls of gadgets is pretty neat.

Seems a little risky, but time will tell what the infection rate looks like, and whether or not we have a vaccine come January.

If things continue to slow down, it might not be bad, but I fear we may be approaching a massive second wave even bigger than the first, which will be complicated by flu season hitting at the same time next winter.

Planning doesn't hurt though. They should plan for it happening in person, but have off-ramps in place such that they can back away if the conditions are not ideal.

If you plan for change, you don't have to change your plan!
