Despite previous suggestions made by BenQ (which have since been updated), IGN Italy has confirmed that the PlayStation 5 will not support a native output resolution of 1440p.

“According to the latest information, confirmed directly by Sony to our editorial team during the day today, PS5 will not support the native resolution at 1440p, a resolution that is certainly ‘irrelevant’ for most players, but very ‘dear’ to PC gamers,” the site reported.

This is a disappointing omission for a $500/$400 gaming console that boasts some of the latest display technologies, such as HDMI 2.1...

This is a real head scratcher since there are quite a few games on the PS4 and coming out for the PS5 that will or can run natively in 2560x1440 resolution.

This really only affects users who have their consoles attached to Monitors, instead of their main LCD TV's. How many would this really affect?

That was my thought too.

This must be a negligible minority of users.

Still, seems like a curious choice though. I mean, we know the hardware supports it, as it is AMD stuff. Seems kind of ridiculous to just omit it in software.

Oh.. I agree there's no real technical reason for not support the resolution, but the use-case for it might be so small that it's something that could easily be rolled out post-launch

Between this and not allowing expandability of the SSD at launch (will come in a future update), I'd argue that the Xbox Series X is the more complete and consumer friendly hardware. Also, it seems like 1440p would be easy enough to include. It's still baffling to me that PS4 Pro never got the 1440p support either, that game ran alot of its upgraded titles at a 1440p resolution (upscaled to 4k).

Ought to be able to fix with a patch though. Since we're beginning to see monitors with HDMI 2.0 it would be in their favor to do so. Many t.v.'s support 1440p also. My LG C9 supports 1440p/120hz over HDMI 2.0. However, it may also have something do to with how their OS works. We already know they've included a toggle for 60 FPS since not all games function properly beyond 30 FPS. Could be they didn't include 1440p because most such displays are 144 Hz or higher, and 60 FPS is the highest lock available. Even then, though, a game that's demanding at 4K would perform better at 1440p/60Hz.

Not too concerned about 1440 support myself. I'm actually leaning towards getting a PS5 over a new 3000 series video card lately. Just disappointed in how things were handled with the launch I guess. Also I think the PS5 on my CX TV will be pretty sweet..:)

I don't see this as a big deal given that most of the TV's PS5's will be used on will scale down to 1440P all that well. Many don't handle 1080P scaling all that well either.

I started to write about the importance of 1440p/120.... but then I stopped and realized Sony is right... for consoles. 4K/60 is more important on the checklist.... I suspect a 1440p option could become available with a software update as most modern TVs support it.

Exactly! 4K support trumps 1440p support for the masses.

A lot of hdmi 2.0 4k tvs support 1440 120hz but not 4k 120hz.
With the cpu in the ps5 you would think that instead of rendering 4k internally and down scaling... You could actually get close to 1440 120.

I don't know if it's a lot, but 1440p resolution support has trickled down range in recent years. Support is still such that you need to research if the TV you're looking at buying has it or not.
