The time and place of PS5's unveiling remains a closely guarded secret, but one thing's for sure: it's not happening at E3. A Sony Interactive Entertainment spokesperson told GamesIndustry.biz that the company would not be attending the world's best-known video game industry trade event.

This isn't too surprising, being that Sony skipped last year's show as well. According to the spokesperson, the company doesn't feel that E3 2020 is "the right venue" for what it would be demonstrating this year.

"We will build upon our global events strategy in 2020 by participating in hundreds of consumer events across the globe. Our focus is on making sure fans feel part of the PlayStation family and have access to play their favorite content. We have a fantastic line up of titles coming to PlayStation 4, and with the upcoming launch of PlayStation 5, we are truly looking forward to a year of celebration with our fans."

Of course, this doesn't rule out the fact that the PS5 could be revealed before the trade event, which will run from June 9 to June 11 in Los Angeles. The PlayStation 4 was announced on March 20, 2013 during a special "PlayStation Meeting" event, and the PS5 will almost certainly be revealed in similar fashion.

Following Sony's absence, the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) released the following statement to reassure attendees that E3 2020 shouldn't be missed.

"E3 is a signature event celebrating the video game industry and showcasing the people, brands and innovations redefining entertainment loved by billions of people around the world. E3 2020 will be an exciting, high-energy show featuring new experiences, partners, exhibitor spaces, activations, and programming that will entertain new and veteran attendees alike. Exhibitor interest in our new activations is gaining the attention of brands that view E3 as a key opportunity to connect with video game fans worldwide."
