PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan on Bungie Buyout: “Expect More Acquisitions”

Sony Interactive Entertainment surprised PlayStation fans today by revealing that it would be buying Bungie, the developer behind Destiny and the creator of the Halo series, in a deal valued at 3.4 billion dollars.



PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan has followed that major announcement up by confirming that Sony is “absolutely” planning to make more acquisitions, telling GamesIndustry.biz in an interview today about how the PlayStation family is expected to grow even bigger with purchases that might include some of the world’s best-known game studios. Ryan’s intentions seem to be clear indication that Microsoft’s acquisitions haven’t gone unnoticed by the higher-ups at Sony.

None of this surprises me. We've been seeing consolidation of developers for years now. It's something we've also seen in a lot of other industries. Either through acquisitions or a few players dominating the market until there are only a few left. There are very few industries that have room for a significant amount of players to co-exist over the long haul.
 
I got 2 bucks that says Sega is on the list.

I'd like to see them go big for something like Take 2, but I think that may be too big for their budget. They don't have MS's endless mountains of cash to burn.
 
SEGA would be potentially worth while for the IP's it has but quite honestly, I think it's not really a good buy unless they have someone on staff somewhere that knows how to leverage them.

They bought Bungie for obscene money, so I would say they do not.
