Since launching in November, the Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 have become highly sought-after items that are sold out everywhere. Ironically, this hasn’t equated to record-breaking sales for either company. Research Director Piers Harding-Rolls of Ampere Analysis has published a report showing how next-gen console sales have matched the previous launches.

So, economies are down, but demand for home entertainment devices is up, thus sales evened out?

Interesting to see it in numbers :)
 
Seems they could have exceeded them by a lot if they had a better idea of demand, especially ms seems to have wasted a lot of opportunity.

The series s is somewhat available over here (as in every now and then there a a couple available), but I want a disc based one and those are MIa since the preorders sold out, haven't even heard of new inventory on the series X

Risk vs. reward; the demand likely isn't going away, and the risk of overproducing is pretty high, since the cost is probably pretty high given that TSMC is making the SoCs.
