Quake is officially back. Twenty-five years after the release of the original on June 22, 1996, Bethesda today released an enhanced version of the iconic dark fantasy FPS for PC, Xbox One (including Xbox Game Pass), PS4, and Nintendo Switch. It also includes backward compatibility for Microsoft and Sony’s next-gen consoles, the Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5.

Bethesda’s new enhanced re-release of Quake features a number of welcome upgrades over the arguably outdated-looking original. These include support for resolutions of up to 4K, as well as widescreen support on compatible platforms. Quake fans can also enjoy enhanced models, dynamic lighting, anti-aliasing, depth of field, and other visual enhancements.

I was originally excited about this but it doesn't look so hot IMHO.

I'll give it a whirl sometime this weekend (downloading for Gamepass). Haven't played it in ages and I wouldn't be surprised if the new campaign ties into the rumored new Quake entry somehow.

Modern conveniences are nice and all, but this honestly doesn't look or play any better than the original. I understand having this for consoles, though, since there hasn't been a version on those platforms that has been faithful to the PC version yet. Still, it's a nice free addition to have if you already owned the original on GOG or Steam.

One nice thing about this version is it restores the whole last mission in episode 2. I was actually confused at first going through it because I didn't remember that mission being so long. It flows much better, though, and makes a whole lot more sense.

I really wish that Bethesda and the new id would come to their senses and eventually release id Tech 5 and id Tech 6 open source in the future. You can't have a lasting legacy if you just let your games die.
There is no Quake RTX afaik, only Q2 RTX.

and it's free if you have the original, can't realy complain about an enhanced version if it is free right? right? Who am I kidding this is the internet.
He meant he would have rather gotten a version of Quake RTX instead of this.

THIS. As soon as id Software got bought by Bethesda, I KNEW we weren't gonna see any more idTech engines go open source, and we would never see games based on those engines have native Linux versions. Makes me especially sad with idTech 6 and 7.
