The Raspberry Pi Foundation has announced that the Raspberry Pi 5 is now available for pre-order at approved resellers ahead of its release in late October. This latest generation of the popular single-board computer, which is available in 4 GB ($60) or 8 GB ($80) variants and marks the very first to feature silicon designed in‑house in Cambridge, U.K., features a 2.4 GHz quad-core 64-bit Arm Cortex-A76 CPU and VideoCore VII GPU, enabling what the company says is 2x to 3x better CPU and GPU performance versus its 2019 predecessor, the Raspberry Pi 4. Peak power consumption has risen from 8 to 12 watts, however, due to the higher performance ceiling.

Oh, that's exciting. I could upgrade the distributed computing pi farm

Nice. I wonder how that compares to something like an Odroid N2+.

If the claims on both sides are accurate (Odroid N2+ twice the performance of RPI4, and RPI5 3x the performance of RPI 4, tthe RPI5 should now have the lead.

I have a few N2+ units in the house I use as Kodi/MythTV frontend boxes. They do a good job, and use much less power than the mini-ITX Haswell era celerons they replaced.

Still no need to upgrade though. They handle the workload just fine.

A bit worried about the jump in TDP - I do understand you don't get performance for free, but part of the allure of RPi is that it's low power and no moving parts. You start needing to add fans and .. I'm less interested.

Maybe you are able to underclock it, or set some sort of TDP limit?

its very easy to undervolt and under clock them - just an entry in a text file. All my pi 4s can run at stock speed at 20% less voltage than stock
