so the windows install on my son's pc went kaput. I haven't been able to recover it. I was going to install windows 11 anyway so just I did that. I kept the old SSD, so everything my son needs is in the documents folder.

Thing is I need a couple of cookies from the old install. Is there a way to import them into the new install?

Wouldn't that depend on the browser he was using?

Gemini advice:

If you are moving to a new computer or need to move cookies manually, you can copy the profile files.
  1. Close Microsoft Edge completely on both computers.
  2. On the old machine, open File Explorer and go to:
    %LocalAppData%\Microsoft\Edge\User Data
  3. Copy the Default folder (or the specific profile folder you use).
  4. Move this folder to the new computer in the same location:
    %LocalAppData%\Microsoft\Edge\User Data
  5. If prompted, replace the existing files in the destination.
  6. Relaunch Edge.
Important Notes on Cookie Transfer
  • Encrypted Data: While favorites and some settings will carry over, some cookies and active logins may not transfer because they are encrypted for specific machines or users.
  • Third-Party Tool: For manual importing of cookie files (.txt or .json formats), you can use browser extensions like "Cookies by lfj.io" available in the Microsoft Edge Addons store.
  • Restore Point: Renaming the existing Preferences file to Preferences.bak in the User Data folder can sometimes force Edge to re-index old data upon reopening.
