Rockstar Mag’s Chris Liberty has shared some depressing rumors regarding the sixth mainline installment of Rockstar Games’ hit open-world franchise, Grand Theft Auto. Liberty, a reliable source for GTA leaks, claims that GTA VI is in development hell and that the project had to be restarted after writer and co-founder Dan Houser left the company in 2020. Take-Two was supposedly planning to announce the game that same year.

There’s some good news for Rockstar fans, however. Liberty also claimed that the original Red Dead Redemption that was released in 2010 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles is finally getting a remastered release on PC. The game is expected to feature graphical upgrades just like Rockstar’s upcoming compilation of GTA remasters, Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition.

Wooow, took them a looooong-*** time to bring RDR1 to PC (if it actually is coming). Too late for me, I borrowed that game and played the **** outta it a decade ago. It was my favorite Rockstar game until GTA V. I know a lot of people who really wanted that game to come to PC several years ago, myself included. Well, better late than never I guess.

My guess is that they basically rebuilt RD1 in one of their newer engines. I remember reading a detailed article about how it was originally built using an older engine and they tried to shovel some features for a newer one into it which made for a complicated mess and that's what ultimately held it back from being ported over.

I am fine with GTA VI being in development hell. It sucks for those missing internal deadlines or whatever. But the sheer breadth and depth of Rockstar games means I am not worried about the end product lacking. And that to me is more important than an arbitrary deadline.

I agree, and it's not like they have ever felt rushed to release VI. I mean... V has been out for 8 years now, was originally released two console generations ago, and has only the top selling video game in the world by a long shot.

If they were in a rush to get VI out the door, they have had plenty of time up until now, and any "crunch" they are pushing is strictly artificial.

Development hell doesn't mean what you think it means. It's not a good place to be in. It doesn't mean they just missed an internal deadline or milestone. Development hell can mean creative and/or technical difficulties, major leadership changes, even complete resets of the project. For example Vampire Bloodlines 2 is definitely was/is in development hell.

I think Duke nukem forever would be a good example of developpement hell or star citizen.

I don't think they are in any rush to release anything. Isn't GTAV still a top selling game? All the RP servers and community customizations have kept that game alive and selling.

Too true. It and Skyrim are phenomenons unto themselves in that respect. What's also common for both is that each developer is taking the better part of a decade to get the next one out and it's the fans who're getting antsy. Definitely not rushing.

Surely there are more games out there that have lasted a long time too besides just Skyrim and GTAV. Those two probably being the most recent examples.

Sure I mean Mario Brothers and pong both lasted decades.

Star citizen is deliberately in development hell, they like the current situation and don't even intend to get out of it.

I don't think skyrim is that special. I was much more amazed by oblivion, and played a lot more of it.

I got bored by the voiceovers. After a while they all sounded like the same 2 or 3 people to me which really surprised me. Even more so because at one point I remember reading that some celebrities we're involved. However, the modding community has had a huge impact on the longevity of the game with mods and even new content. That's what I was referencing in saying it's become a shared phenomenon with GTA V.

Oh absolutely. The original Mass Effect games definitely come to mind.

I just want to clarify that my comments were not about long lasting, never said that, just that the involvement from their communities have created a phenomenon that was almost unheard of before them. I mean, I do remember hacking games back on my Atari 8-bit back in the day to swap out sprites for various custom mods but stuff like that doesn't even compare to the 1000s and more there are for these two. Sure there had been some games before them that engaged the community, and not trying to ignore any, but these two in particular have set some impressive sales records and both have continued to engage their fans to do more while the developers work across nearly a decade for their next instalments.
