Filmmaker Roland Emmerich is one of the latest to lay blame for the current state of the movie industry on superhero films. He has thrown Star Wars under the bus as well. Famous for disaster-themed movies ranging from alien invasions (Independence Day, Independence Day: Resurgence, Stargate) to natural disasters (2012, The Day After), and even an occasional monster rampage (Godzilla), he’s covered the genre with a diversity of story angles. His latest effort, Moonfall, tackles the concept of the moon being a giant megastructure and what would happen if it crashed into the Earth.

A lot has changed since 1996 when Independence Day debuted and established itself as one of the biggest blockbusters of that summer. The world has seen the rise of multibillion-dollar superhero franchises dominating cinemas. Since then, Star Wars has had two trilogies...

I think badly written, politically motivated, condescending piles of garbage are ruining the movie industry.
Yep, and I don't believe Mr. Emmerich, or those other Hollywood types, have come to realize there's not a single genre that hasn't been infected by it.

LOL, they weren't ruining it when Iron Man, and the Dark Knight came out.

FTFY. Basically, any well written movie can work. The catch is the more you try to inject into the film beyond the core story, the better that writing needs to be.

"Because naturally Marvel and DC Comics, and Star Wars, have pretty much taken over. It’s ruining our industry a little bit, because nobody does anything original anymore."

I fully agree with the comments about having good writing/material to make a movie about, but he's also right IMHO that ideas are being locked behind copyright laws and IP agreements. I think anybody should be able to make their own version of Iron Man. I don't believe they would have the right to call it Marvel's Iron Man. It would have to be branded their own name. But the images, likeness, etc, etc, should be useable by others to create basically "fan-made" stories. This locking up of ideas is insanity. It monopolizes culture and prevents any competition.

Can you show a single movie that works but also pushes the message, to back up that claim?

Can you make a subjective opinion based statement that I won't disagree with on principal.

Come on man... now you're being pedantic.

Sounds like Roland and Chris Nolan need to hook up and have a bro-down.

I mean, I'm not a big fan of the super hero genre, but ruining the industry? Come on.

Super hero movies have a fan base. Other movies are appreciated by other people.

To each their own. We don't all have to like or watch everything.

I know I've watched almost none of the Marvel universe films.

Of course in the land of feelings asking for evidence is being 'pedantic'.
"Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence" I'm just asking for plain old evidence.

Yet the show has to work (an opinion) and convey a message you find abhorrent. So in essence if it has a message you dislike it will never work for you. So yes... you're trying to be pedantic about it and you full well know it. Lets not pretend. ;)

I want to know whether he actually believes that or just blowing hot air. It doesn't have to be a movie I like, but one he thinks works.

So in essence if it has a political message it will never work for you.
FTFY

I don't want any messaging and virtue signalling in entertainment. It's not my fault that movies that push a message happen to push far left ideology. If they were pushing a pro-gun, bald eagle, new-born christian, young earth creationist, etc. message, It would bother me all the same.

I'm the same way. If there is any political messaging in a film its an uphill battle to get me to like it. I generally dislike it even when they are pushing values or ideas I agree with. Usually it's due to the hamfisted approach to the writing or factual errors and any number of things. There are exceptions on both sides of the isle, but most of the time it comes across as pandering, myopic, one dimensional and it's often a hallmark of bad writing.

When it lacks in nuance and subtlety, that's your first clue its a badly written pile of trash.

I think that Marvel/DC/SW movies actually helped save the industry specially during the pandemic.
Not a single movie dragged more people to the movies than even WW84 or Black Widow and those were not great performers to begin with.

Long gone are the days of drama/comedy on the big screen, they will all be relegated to Netflix and other streaming services. Only huge blockbusters will remain and that's fine with me.

BTW Moonfall sucks big time, Rolandd Emmerich should blame himself and not Disney for its terrible performance at the box office.

I watched the trailer for that and said "F*ck No", not even for free.

DC Comic movies have taken over? There have been a handful, but I don't know that I would put them in the same level of ... cultural significance (putting it politely) as I would MU

I kinda liked Don't Look Up for this specific reason.
