Schneider Electric has introduced the APC Back-UPS Pro Gaming: an uninterruptible power supply that’s designed specifically for gamers. This is a sleek-looking, 1500 VA sine-wave unit with six battery back-up outlets to keep gaming PCs and consoles going during power outages, brownouts, and other sudden electrical issues. There are also four surge-only outlets and three USB ports in the front for easy charging of wireless gaming accessories, smartphones, and other portable devices.

With this being a gaming product, Schneider Electric has made sure to squeeze RGB lighting effects onto it by way of its patented “reactor circle,” which serves as the UPS’s main display. In addition to providing power...

That is... actually.. not uninteresting. But I still prefer cyberpower units right now. I don't need my ups to look good.

I'm interested, but only if the price is right. The CyberPower units cost about $200 or so for a 1500VA unit that outputs 950w. This would have to do the same and cost something reasonable. APC units are generally more expensive than most other options.

If you aren't aware Schneider electric bought out apc. So this is ostensibly an apc unit.

And APC went downhill fast once that occurred.... unfortunately.

Eaton is my go-to right now, but they are not as price competitive as, say, Cyberpower.

As important as UPSs are, they're just not that complicated.

At the same time, if a UPS has to be visible, at least these aren't ugly?

[I also wind up using Cyberpower just about everywhere due to price]

Not bad looking. Now just waiting for someone to incorporate RGB into the power cords next. It'll look like something out of an 80's or 90's movie.

Look up the Lan Li Strimer.

And I'm sorry.

No it's not an external to your case RGB power cable... they haven't made one of those... yet.

Yeah I've seen those and some other internal accessories. I've felt that I'm kind of middle of the road when it comes to RGB, even a bit minimalist. I do like some illumination, and the APS is minimal, but lately some of things coming out with the Ampere cards are really making me nauseuos just looking at their images. Ultimately though, as long as we have the option to turn things off I'm happy. I'll occasionally crank things up for the holidays in order to add ambience to the room but that's about it. Usually I just keep it blue and white, or off.

I looked closely at the Strimer, but honestly just being a clip-on accessory turned me off of it. If they'd made the cables actually glow, and done it without making them too unwieldy, I might be more interested.

The little lights they put on the ends of some laptop power cords are great!

But for a desktop which shouldn't move, and on cables that should be hidden, I think you squarely nailed the 'step too far' :)

LOL this is a marketing gimmick. Even a 1500va UPS won't last 5 minutes with a next gen console running a game, plus your giant big screen TV, and whatever else you have plugged in (amplifier, sound bar, etc etc). And if it doesn't have a connectivity option to your gaming console, it won't know to shut down safely in event of power outage.

That being said, I do use an old Cyberpower 700va something or other in my living room for the TV and the cable DVR. That prevents short outages or brownouts from hosing up the DVR or spiking my TV. So there is a use for UPS in the living room, just don't spend a lot of $$ on it.

Yeah I use my main UPS for my PC/monitors/speaker system/external drives/FiOS modem+router device, and I have another older, weaker UPS for my game console entertainment centers that I got for free from a friend who was getting rid of it for a beefier replacement some years ago. So yeah, free UPS definitely works out great for living room or console side of a game room.

The Lian Li Strimer is uuhh... interesting I guess. I think in my younger days I might've been more interested in it. There's a lot more RGB **** out there than I thought. I'm a UV guy. Back in the 2000s I was using DFI LANParty boards with UV-reactive slots and brackets, and I used UV-reactive SATA and IDE cables. I don't use any of that stuff anymore, but I still use cold cathode blacklights to give off a very dim glow through the dark tinted window of my PC case. I live in the dark so I don't like too much light coming from my PC, and I think the blacklights work out great. I also have some single-color LED fans. Back in the day I wanted the UV-reactive fans but never did end up using any.

I think the PC market has gone overboard with the RGB lighting stuff, but that's not to say I don't use it myself from time to time. My keyboard has RGB backlighting, which I use to set individual keys, or groups of keys, to certain static colors. H100i waterblock/pump unit has RGB Corsair logo on it, I also set that to a single static color. Logitech G502 mouse has RGB lighting, but I don't really pay attention to it. I think I left it on the default color cycle. Never bothered to change it. It's usually covered by my hand anyways, or hidden when I slide the desk's keyboard tray in.

...lately some of things coming out with the Ampere cards are really making me nauseuos just looking at their images.
Yeah I feel yah on that.

Ultimately though, as long as we have the option to turn things off I'm happy.
Same here.

Haha not a bad idea!

I did not know that.
