Sony Announces PlayStation 5 ($499) and PS5 Digital Edition ($399) Pricing

Finally. At the end of this afternoon’s PlayStation 5 Showcase, Sony announced that the PlayStation 5 would be released on November 12 for $499. Its cheaper sibling – the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, which won’t have an optical disc drive – will be available on that same date for $399.



Sony’s pricing puts the standard PlayStation 5 in line with Microsoft’s Xbox Series X, which also costs $499. We previously heard rumors that the regular console might cost $599 (or even higher), so the official number seems pretty reasonable. Being that the flagship Xbox console...

As predicted. I wonder what Sony's profit margin is on these. They don't sell at a loss, but that doesn't mean they wouldn't accept a 1% margin just to meet MS's price range.

As predicted. I wonder what Sony's profit margin is on these. They don't sell at a loss, but that doesn't mean they wouldn't accept a 1% margin just to meet MS's price range.

Most likely they will be selling at a early loss but once volume reaches a specific threshold the loss transforms onto profit. Then its advancement on tech over the next two to three years to drive the production price down and keep profits growing.

Totally agree. I might get one of these. You could call me a fanboy but I haven't had one since the PS2. Really just after a good 4K player, with a complete streaming app feature set, so I can have a all-in-one device for our receiver and projector. Playing games is 2nd, and I like their exclusives. I'll still wait for the reviews though.
