The PlayStation 5, Sony's latest video games console, is no being sold under the pretense that it is powerful enough to deliver up to 8K UHD (7680 × 4320) experiences, according to photos shared online that show how the 8K badge on PS5 packaging is no longer present, with only the 4K 120 and HDR logos remaining.

Those are some great quotes. Gotta love stories like these for nice giggle or laugh. Current consoles and 8K sure, sure.

Admittedly though 8K on PC is a joke as well unless playing minesweeper or using a reasonably powerful rig combined with upscaling tech.

Regardless, 8K was pretty much DOA. Even the more affordable TVs end up sitting unsold because most folks are like, why bother. I chased the pixel dragon for roughly 20-30 years and I am completely happy with a high quality 4K display.

I think 4K is where it tops out for me too, and honestly a lot of the time 1440p is good enough for me. I can't imagine I will ever have a TV big enough for 8K to matter (imagine the sitting distance for that sucka too), and I shudder to think about a GPU trying to render a game at 8K. At 1440p and 4K I appreciate the increase in detail for objects in the distance and fine small detail over 1080p, but beyond that there are going to be diminishing returns, same as for high refresh rate.

I'm thinking the same.

There is content where I can tell the difference in 4K and 1080, all other things equal. But it isn't ~all~ content, like the jump from SD to HD was. And most games, honestly, until I am starting at just a UI or static image, I find pretty hard to tell the difference when the frames are moving and I'm trying to keep up with whatever the action is.

I won't say "never" to 8k, but right now I see no reason to prioritize it at all. I feel more or less the same way about high refresh rate.

I just made the move to 4k. 8k for a consumer like me is easily a decade off.

On a TV Screen from a reasonable distance I can barely call the difference between 1080p and 4K. On PC, maybe I can imagine a tangible difference between 4K and 8K, but I'd rather they improved other aspects of the graphics before going for 4x the resolution.
