Mortal Kombat's silver-screen comeback may actually live up to the goriness of the games. Screenwriter Greg Russo confirmed on Twitter that the movie will be R-rated and feature fatalities "for the first time ever." He didn't provide any hints as to what gory death sequences audiences would be treated to, however.

If fans want to get technical, there were fatalities in the original Mortal Kombat (1995) movie and its sequel, Annihilation (1997), but this is still welcome news. Producers were evidently unsuccessful in getting things toned down for a more revenue-friendly PG-13 rating.

It was also revealed that Joe Taslim would be playing Sub-Zero in the reboot. Taslim is best known for his martial arts prowess in action films such as The Raid and The Night Comes for Us. No news on Scorpion yet.

Simon McQuoid will be making his feature-film directorial debut working off a script by Greg Russo. James Wan’s Atomic Monster is producing with Todd Garner. Larry Kasanoff, E. Bennett Walsh, Michael Clear, and Sean Robins executive producing. Filming gets underway later this year in Australia.

I loved the original movie. I remember all us kids getting my parents to pile us in the Astro minivan and hauling us to the movie theater on base at NSA Naples. I also remember my mother in shock that she took a bunch of third/fourth graders to go see a movie about sorcery. Lol.

I remember two fatalities right off the bat. Blade's Kiss Of Death in the second movie, and Shang Tsung using his Soultaker in the first film.
Also can't forget about Liu Kang using his dragon morph Dragon's Bite.

All I can remember about the first movie was that there was this Swooshing sound every time a flashlite went across the screen.

I thought, at the time, I wish I had a flashlite that made that noise.

I'm sure that Fenix makes a Sonya Blade edition of the UC35.
