It appears that Hollywood has run out of ideas again. Variety has learned that Blumhouse Productions is working on a reboot of John Carpenter and Kurt Russell’s classic sci-fi horror film, The Thing (1982), which pitted a group of Arctic research scientists against a parasitic alien that transformed its hosts in grotesque ways.

Luckily, John Carpenter could be involved, so the reboot may not be a total bust. The director was recently asked whether he was working on anything with Blumhouse chief Jason Blum at the Fantasia International Film Festival, and he had this to say:

“I have? I don’t know about that,” Carpenter said. “But we’ve talked about — I think he’s going to be working on ‘The Thing,’ rebooting ‘The Thing.’ I’m involved with that...

Loved Carpenter's 'The Thing'. Not sold on a remake, the prequel was forgettable and unnecessary.

I think if there's anything from Carpenter's backlog that could use another entry, it's the 'Escape From' franchise (Escape from Oregon?). Feels extra relevant with the current social climate.

Huge JC fan and even bigger fan of his version of The Thing but totally not interested in a reboot. A sequel based on the game could be good. Heck, I'd like to see a sequel to Big Trouble in Little China. A reboot for any of his movies-hard pass.

edit: BTW There are some rumblings a 4K version of The Thing could be coming out in the next year or so. I'd be down for that!

Now... someone... go make me a Flash Gordon remake/reboot

Oh they will, they will, along with Highlander and just about every other movie not already re-made from the 80's. There's no end in sight for IPs to be culled and harvested at this point.

Wanna impress me, Howard the Duck remake and make it suck worse than the original. Is the pedo from that film available for a cameo?

...how about a re-reboot of the Halloween franchise ..again .... maybe a Zack Snyder cut .. or call it Halloween-Requiem ..

JC's "The Thing" was already a reboot of the classic black & white Frankensteinian vegetarian monster .. and it was a heckuva reboot. One of my all time favorites. Some great practical effects by good ol' Stan Winston. You can't redo a redo that was done as good as JC's version of "The Thing" .. it will fail.

I could see HtD done up Ryan Renoylds style not being total suckage.

For a little while, there were rumors during the Avengers>Guardian movies. He and Astro dog had those cameos also.

The original movie was Communist scare propaganda like a lot of sci-fi movies of the time. From what I've read this new movie is actually supposed to be a sequel to John Carpenter's film.

One of the reasons the prequel was bad was it's use of CG in place of practical effects like the 1982 film. It just looked comical, not disturbing and frightening. I hope that they learn from that mistake and make more use of practical effects in the next one. Unfortunately masterful practical effects is becoming a rare art these days. Last film I can remember that did it well was Evil Dead from 2013.

Yar, agree with the cg effects from the prequel being bad. Lost that disturbing quality.

Without being super knowledgeable on the subject, I do feel the practical effects use in the new Dark Crystal series looked great (but very different style than The Thing). I think if the Jim Henson Company were to bring their practical effects over to a more mature setting (read: body horror) it'd be great.

Totally true on all of it. The thing I always find comical from the original B+W is the 'coffee talk' pacing of their dialog. I always thought the body-snatchers-esque seen with the pods in the lab was cool though.

I remember watching some extra somewhere, with the cast, and they said they really did feel some nausea when shooting that scene with it on the lab table in the beginning. It just looked so real. Stan Winston is amazing. I doubt any current CG will ever be able to fully replicate that tactile effect you got with those visuals.

If anyone hasn't seen the 1982 John Carpenter version, watch it. It still holds up (except for the Apple II computers). The visual effects are disgusting and amazing for back in the day. I had it on laserdisc, DVD, and now Bluray.

The reboot/prequel/whatever was dumb.

Not sure we need a "reboot". John must need retirement money.
