Tim Sweeney has shared his thoughts on the Metaverse and concept of a single storefront for all platforms. He was recently in South Korea to praise its new law requiring Google and Apple to accept third-party payments. While there, he expressed the following in regard to the growing fragmentation of the gaming industry.

What the world really needs now is a single store that works with all platforms, to buy software in one place, knowing that they’d have it on all devices and all platforms.

Such unification is unlikely to ever exist, but he also discussed the economic impact the Metaverse will have on the gaming industry and world economy while giving a jab at Apple and Google. He stated the following at last week’s Global...

There is already a storefront that every single developer should be using, it's called GOG.

Isn’t that kinda what he’s sueing Apple for and why he was very anti-Microsoft back with Win10?

Also, Steam already works on darn near every PC platform (it’s missing consoles and mobile, which apart from Android are difficult to impossible to tap into). Epic is among the most closed platform out there - only supporting Windows at the moment.

This is probably the first thing Tim Sweeney has ever said that I can get behind.

Good luck making it happen though...

I'm halfway there.

I'm all for stores being cross-platform.

I'm against only "one" single store.

This might seem a good idea on a surface level, but it is bullcrap. Why would I want the same storefront on console and PC? They are separate platform, this is like saying I want to buy bigmacs at burger king.

Besides everything that is universal is somehow compromised. There is no such thing as one size fits all.

And lastly but most importantly, one storefront is the exact reason why epic is bad. If there is one store, there is no choice for the consumer. They can sell their product at any price. The end of competition. It might be sweeney's wet dream to be the sole proprietor of all gaming sales, but it would be bad for everyone else.

That is not what he is saying, he wants one store so you only need to buy a game once and can play it on all your devices that are capable oof doing so.

Obviously exclusives will still be exclusive but multiplatform games will be one purchase play on whatever you want. think of iy a bit like netflix or disney+, there are also multiple providers but not limited to one platform.

Misdirection. I've never ever thought how good it would be if I could play some games on an inferior platform. I buy games on the platform that I think is best that the game is available on. I buy let's say Far Cry 6 on PC, then never in all eternity will I want to play it on playstation.

This is like their free game giveaways, only worse. A game I had no interest in to buy or play won't suddenly become interesting and worth my time when it's free. My time is much more valuable to me than the cost of games.

There's a huge difference between "one store where..." and "a store where..."

I think @MadMummy76 is correct: pretty sure Sweeny is saying "one store" - which is funny because that's exactly the reason he's suing Apple and all. If it were just "A store" - well, EGS could have done that at any time, but they haven't. Steam, or maybe Humble - they sell some console titles after all and will sell titles from multiple other storefronts - are the closest thing we have.

Taken from one of the articles
“Over the coming decades, the metaverse has the potential to become a multitrillion-dollar part of the world economy,” the CEO said at a conference in Seoul on Tuesday. “The next three years are going to be critical for all of the metaverse-aspiring companies like Epic, Roblox, Microsoft, Facebook,” he said in an interview after. “It’s kind of a race to get to a billion users, whoever brings on a billion users first, would be the presumed leader in setting the standards.”

So he is definatelly not talking about his shop to be the only one, maybe the biggest one if he can help it, but like I said a shop where you buy a game once and play it on whatever device you want provided it is supported.

You can not seriously think he is suing Apple and Google for having a monopoly to then start one himself, he would lose his cases on the spot and would be sued back so fast his head would be spinning.

I'm against only "one" single store.

That's fair.

I'm all for being able to choose a storefront of my liking, and being able to buy ALL games in that one storefront.

I also want to have a choice which storefront that is.

In other words, I want multiple storefronts, all carrying all the games, so I can make a choice based on the merits of the storefront, not which game exclusives they carry.

That reminds me. Even if some kind of fantastical thing were to happen with an all-inclusive storefront, it would only be a matter of time for some tool to come along and claim they're revolutionary with their own exclusives.

He is literally doing that with EGS on PC, wooing devs to have a monopoly on selling their games.

yeah.... that's not gonna happen
