On my FreeBSD installations, I like to use XFCE. It does what is needed, with minimal setup. Lots of the BSD guys like to use basic window managers like openbox and manually install all the widgets, gadgets, and the like. I may play around with that some day, but for now, just getting the system where I can do basic use without the bloat of KDE (though I do like it in general) or GNOME.
