Nobody buys a next-gen console for old games, but if the Xbox Series X's alleged launch titles (Halo: Infinite, Hellblade 2) can't hold your attention, Microsoft has you covered. Gamespot has learned that the Series X will support backwards compatibility on day one: more specifically, gamers will have the entire Xbox One library to tide them over until next-gen's catalog begins filling out. Gamerscore, Achievements, and game saves will all remain intact.

"We have thousands of games that run on Xbox One today," Xbox partner director of program management Jason Ronald told GameSpot. "We want those games to be able to come forward with you but we also want your services to come with you. We want your gaming legacy to come with you, whether that's your Gamerscore, whether that's your friends list, all your Achievements, your game saves, all of that should come forward so there are no barriers for you as you think about moving forward."

I'm liking that all of the next gen will include B/C, most of my console game purchases were digital but MS and Sony have been good with their account migration in the past.

I wonder if any game that utilizes a 'dynamic resolution' scaler will be running at native 4k for these titles.

Xbox architect Jason Ronald teases big things for 2026 — “we want to celebrate the great legacy of Xbox next year”

A new BBC video showcases the Xbox Ally X handheld and includes a short interview with Jason Ronald, who hints that Xbox’s 25th anniversary could bring major announcements.

Jason Ronald, the VP of Xbox Gaming Devices and Ecosystem, took the spotlight briefly to discuss the handheld and give a few small teases about what fans can expect from Xbox next year as it approaches its 25th anniversary.

Jason’s comments and hints at Xbox’s future

the most interesting comments were made when Gerken questioned Jason directly on whether backwards compatibility will be expanded. He asked, “Child me would be so unhappy if I didn't press you on this point. You know, are you going to bring more original Xbox games to Game Pass in the future?”

Jason gave a fairly ambiguous response, not saying a lot but also saying enough to give me and many others hope:

I can’t announce anything today but in 2026 it’s the 25th anniversary of Xbox and we want to celebrate the great legacy and the history that we have with Xbox as well as defining the future for where the Xbox ecosystem is going.
I can’t confirm or deny what you’re asking, but stay tuned. We have a lot of exciting things to share next year.
