There are now 2 medusa halos

  1. Medusa halo (OG or mega) with 384bit? lpddr6 & 48 CU rdna 5
  2. Medusa halo premium (mini) with 128bit lpddr6 & 24 CU — supposedly drop in replacement for strix halo on same socket
  3. Medusa point + optional cpu CCD — replacement for strix point premium
  4. Medusa point — replacement for strix point budget & kracken

Had to share... listening to some eminem (new truck new sound system wheee!) so this actually sounded like a .. bar.. I believe is what it is called. four DIMMS Two Dimms, all the DIMMS for meee!!

I think the 'sponsored' XOC guys have hit that high :)

DDR5-10K seems to be within the realm of reason for the memory itself for retail release. The question is where the memory controllers + motherboards are. As I'm basing this on TeamGroup already selling DDR5-9600 CUDIMMs on Newegg.

Yeah thanks for bringing that up here. It does look like the rumours that Medusa Halo had been nixed are overblown, though at the same time, consider the source. Still, IF TRUE, it sounds good for the future of Halo products. My interpretation of it is that AMD would rather produce Halo SoCs than mdGPUs.

I do find this kind of SoCs quite interesting. Might at some point switch to mini PC when GPU is good enough.

I plan to go Framework Medusa Halo, or maybe Bee-link Medusa Halo, because it's cuter, if I don't find a equally cute case for Framework, I don't like their Halo case.

I don't know, Minisforum MS-S1 Max finally made an appearance and while we need more data, reviews, and a teardown it might be looking like the best chassis so far to me.

That's not quite fair. While you can get a mac mini with a similar GPU, it's the M4 Pro option that'll set you back at least $1600 for a 24GB version. You can't get the equivalent 128GB of ram at all and even 64GB is already more expensive.

Then again this form factor is actually more like Mac Studio, than Mac mini. Studio has the more powerful M4 Max which you can get for similar price at $1999, though only with 36GB of ram. 128GB bumps the price up to $3500.

The Beelink has it's uses if you need 128GB (local LLMs for instance) but IMO they should also offer a 64GB/32GB cheaper versions

Yeah, as Gideon said, it's a Studio clone, not MacMini. Mac has a different set of problems, as very costly updates. In Beelink, with 2 M2 slots, I can get set for storage with 500euro and get 2 4TB gen4 M2 with cache and be done. If I try getting 8TB on a Mac, I could get an extra Mac Studio for the same price. They really gouge prices for upgrades

And yes, I'd be satisfied with a 64GB RAM version, I don't run AI's. Something like what Framework does with their offer. I'll wait for their Medusa Halo motherboard and get a COOJ MQ4 case, most probably, because that looks cool also. Lack of USB ports is what is kind of makes me want for other variants, as Beelink or Minisforum do have more ports

The MQ4, and actually most SFF mini-ITX cases don't have enough clearance for the tall heatsink + fan of the Framework. It might have enough space to fit a 15mm slim fan on the heatsink but I haven't done a detailed analysis.

It's kind of a big miss on Framework's part, they didn't try to achieve any standardized ITX heatsink height which would have assured wide compatibility with popular SFF cases and instead did whatever they wanted for their proprietary case.

Extra disappointing because you can't use any other cooler due to the proprietary layout and mounting for STX HALO
