COVID-19 may have killed the country’s biggest theater chain. In a new SEC filing (via Variety), AMC Theaters admitted that it wasn’t sure it could survive due to the ramifications of coronavirus, which forced the company to shutter more than 1,000 theaters and lay off hundreds of employees. Apparently, AMC hasn’t made a single cent of revenue over the last few months.

“We cannot be certain that we will have access to sufficient liquidity to meet our obligations for the time required to allow our cash generating operations to resume or normalize,” the company warned.

“We may not be able to obtain additional liquidity and any relief provided by lenders, governmental...

I won't lie, I like going to the theatre for those big blockbusters.

The problem is, there are so few big blockbusters I care to see.

So, I would kinda miss AMC if they went out, but not really.

It kind of sucks, when I was a single man movies were a mainstay of entetainment for me and my friends. Now as an adult with teenagers and a wife and all.. much less so. Add in Coronavirus and movies just not being released and this is what you get.

I wouldn't be too sad about AMC going away. Their tickets are near double what the local Movie Tavern charges and the AMC experience is worse (seats, food, beverages, etc). Of course Movie Tavern may have the same sort of issue - but they also started going down hill last year when their private equity overlords sold them to Marcus Theaters (ticket and food/drink prices went up about 20%, but are still much lower than AMC/Regal/etc.).

Can't tell you the last time I've been to an AMC theater.

We go to Regal theaters due to the fully reclining sofa seating, or to Studio Movie Theater. SMT is awesome. Wait staff that server you food and drink during the movie, only about 50 seats per screen. Costs a little more, but the experience is good.

I would honestly be upset if it didnt seem to me as if they never tried to get better in the first place. When things were good all they focused on was nickle and dimming you.

Let the entire movie theater industry shrivel up and die. We don't need them anymore. We live in a world of $500 65" 4K flat screens, and infinite movies available to stream. Why do we need to keep paying $20 per seat to go see worthless Hollywood CGI-fest sequels and reboots.

It's just sad to see not only this business, but a lot of businesses going under due to this unfortunate pandemic.

Cost too much to really enjoy it anyway. I never, ever buy anything at the concession because it's so dang pricey. I go to a theater owned by Regal that's right across the street from a nice sports bar. If I go to a movie, I go get a buzz at the bar, watch the movie, then go back to drinking. All in the same parking lot.

For me personally the movie theater "experience" was destroyed by high prices anyway. Meh, no way Im going to miss big chains. To be honest sadly I'm not sure cinemas can come back in any form that would work out and be different... high commercial realstate and high commercial rent wouldn't allow it. If thise where much much lower, the business landscape could be reformed significantly, but as long as those are so high, nothing will really work out too well. (To me this applies to all business, I think high rent will crush growth after this mess keeps unfolding)

For one, now that my children are grown, could care less about theaters.
One of my children says this pandemic has breathed new life into the local Drive-In.
(Two features for 10 bucks a person)
I have a Home Theater, we can watch whatever, whenever.
The "experience " is just too costly for what it provides.

Sounds like most of us are in agreement. From prices that are too high, to concession stuff that's been outta hand for years, and the "experience" that most would like to pass on it seems not many will mourn their passing. Add in how many have some pretty enjoyable home theaters these days and the last nails in the coffin are almost in.

I appreciate how some chains have tried to revive themselves with comfortable seating, full menu food and beer, and overall better atmosphere but I began investing into our home theater over ten years ago. No regrets whatsoever. Even if I pay full price for a 4K disc it's still cheaper than the "experience" and I don't have to worry about parking, driving, or inconsiderate people in the room.

Ahh, but the most important part of having a home theater is this. You can pause what you are watching to go take a leak, grab a drink, do whatever, and not miss any of what you are watching.

Yep. Plus the way our living room is set up there's door to the back yard in it. I've got a grill and smoker right outside it. On cool evenings I sit out there cooking steaks and drinking beer. That's a real tough act to follow plus I usually have a beer fridge stocked with all the local micros. Like I said, no regrets.

Covid-19 didn't kill it, the overreaction and forces lockdown did.

The over reaction that brought me working from home.. I'm not gonna bitch about that. ;) but really I'd love to see some magnolia style theaters with good service come back stronger. And I'm sorry AMC but you missed the boat on starting a streaming service and getting a contract to host new releases.
