AMD will be releasing the "one CPU to rule them all" in 2020: the Ryzen Threadripper 3990X. This is an HEDT beast that boasts 64 cores/128 threads, 288 MB of total cache, and a 280 W TDP. Clock speeds and pricing are unknown, but with the 32C/64T Threadripper 3970X already costing $1,999, this monstrosity could easily run close to $3,000.

AMD has confirmed that it will deliver a 64-core part for its Threadripper platform next year. The CPU will feature 128-threads and 288 MB of total cache (L2+L3). The CPU is likely to cost much more than 3970X (which will be available starting from today for 1999 USD).

I wish I could afford such a monster. I'm no stranger to expensive hardware, but the price on that is likely much steeper than I want to pay.

Somehow with this Chip I feel its a better investment than a 2080ti.
It is expensive but I see it lasting a long long time.

At the same power budget as the 32 core I'd be surprised if it performs that much better as they'll need to scale back the clocks to maintain tdp. I'd welcome a 400w ryzen for a workstation given that many cores.

Well, a 3960X or a 3970X is one thing. I expect the 3990X to be considerably more expensive than either of those. There is no way its less than $3,000. And frankly, while I do buy expensive hardware sometimes, I can't justify it. A 3950X, 10980XE or 3960X is one thing, but $1,500 is probably where I'd draw the line right now.
