A new rumor states that AMD could drop the RDNA branding following AMD RDNA4 and the upcoming generation is more of a "bug fix" for the prior. It's no secret that while RDNA3 has performed admirably at stock settings, it hides a ravenous appetite for power when overclocked. The rumor also hints that RNDA5 could be a new design altogether.

I've seen this all over the place. And quite honestly. I'm a bit meh... whatever. It doesn't get my blood pumping to think about the next design of either GPU chipset. Maybe when you have dual 4k screens common place driving your gaming experience via wireless headsets with wireless power that doesn't cause your brain to mutate I'll be more interested. Or Direct Nural Interfaces.

The thing holding AMD back isn't power consumption or branding - it's production. AMD just hasn't been able or willing to dedicate production resources to discrete GPUs in enough volume to make a dent.

AMD sells everything they make, at what I believe are fantastic prices for AMD (they just follow the "price it at whatever nVidia does" model).

I mean, I get it, AMD isn't doing poorly overall. They are prioritizing the higher margin parts with the production capacity they are able to get. But that means CPUs and Customs are getting priority, and discrete GPUs get the leftovers. They don't necessarily want to flood the market, as it would only erode their margin, and they are sitting fairly well right now.

In today's GPU market, where we are talking about 600W GPU blocks - yeah... I don't think "ravenous appetite" is holding anyone back.

Too true but that OC'd, unlocked, 7900 XTX was hitting just under 700W (696W) and I'd at least blink once or twice at that. Now I'm not pushing my 4090 anywhere near 3.46 GHz, my OC settings sit ~2885-2910 most of the time with TDP ~380-420W and I'm okay with that but I don't know how I'd feel about adding ~300W on top of that.

Although we'll see what happens with the 5090 when it comes out.

Otherwise, I agree with you 100%. If AMD can sell as much as they can make then that's a win/win for them and shows good planning all the more so with everything else you detailed.
