Guy has a point. I was just thinking earlier today (largely because I'm seeing the Dick Van Dyke birthday in the news)... there are always those classic movies that become part of the pop culture, and you see referenced all over the place.

I can throw out dozens:
Young Frankenstein
Blues Brothers
Napoleon Dynamite
Elf (need a Christmas movie in there somewhere)
Stand By Me
2001
... I could go all night

But as soon as we hit the age of Youtube/Tiktok... I can't think of a single one. Now, maybe that's because of my age, and I'm sure that plays a part of it. But... I still see more Lord of the Rings memes thrown around than from anything made in the last 10-15 years. That series came out in 2001-2003 - more than 20 years old now. I ~could~ name some great TV/streaming series - but Theatrical Release movies, not so much. At least not of the same caliber as used to be.

My kid hasn't watched ~any~ of those movies, and he's 18 years old. He spends his time watching, yup... Youtube and Tiktok.

I am 50 years old and only seen 2 of those movies (BB and stand by me) and I can say that I have seen a decent amount of movies.

2001: Space Odyssey and Napoleon Dynamite, both aren't exactly easy to watch movies. I wanted to stop after a few minutes of the monkey scenes at the beginning of 2001 but having read about HAL, I made myself endure it. It is indeed worth watching for the special effects and makes you wonder how they accomplished all that with the technology of that time. Napoleon Dynamite is a pretty low energy kind of movie. You just keep wondering, what am I watching and why? But the final scene is worth it.

Guy has a point.

Yeah, I like how he explains how Comcast/Universal would've been a better fit and counter balance to everyone else. I also had thought the same before reading but had forgotten about how much debt they are still dealing with and basically couldn't offer anything substantial for a deal. I also like his counterpoint on why Netflix is the lesser evil given what will happen once Skydance Ellison has its way.

Napoleon Dynamite is a pretty low energy kind of movie. You just keep wondering, what am I watching and why? But the final scene is worth it.

The movie is steeped in North American rural from the time period. I would not expect someone from a different part of the world to fully relate to it. Some comedy is universal, some is much more nuanced and or targeted.

Yeah, very few rural setting Hollywood movies get made. And they are usually so harrowing. Like the one that gave Jennifer Lawrence real recognition. Winter's Bone.

Different culture over in Europe, I'm sure you guys have your own set of golden standards.. some overlap, but I'd be shocked if there was a lot. I mean... Eurovision exists, and so does RHOBH - very different.

As the french would say "les gouts et les couleurs ne se discutent pas' you can't argue taste and colors, there are plenty of US movies that are part of our pop culture but some do little or anything at all over here. Belgium for one is not know for it's movie scene.

You for the obvious ones like Star wars, Star trek, Rocky, Home alone, Die hard etc.. or stuff like Evil dead trilogy, Gremlins, hellraiser but to each their own.
