He made the comparison comparing a game that had a 18 month pre order to a game with a 5 day pre order. That's the useless comparison. Or did you miss that part?
So he made the comparison about how much a game made in pre orders for an order window 3x as long. They were not stating a date. Just data. You made the call that the data was worthless because the time frames don't match up.
Heck if you wanted to take economics of the world into scale I'm surprised that GTA VI is doing as well as it is. Considering the average dollar buys less and less and people need to focus on survival not cell phones and video games, AND this game is costing MORE.
Would it sell through as fast when consoles are 1k? What about 2k? Will people care?
I mean look at when Cyberpunk was in preorder as compared to GTA VI.
Plenty of data points to show that GTA VI is going to net more in pre orders in a more challenging window potentially in a shorter window of time.
But lets do some math.
Sales for GTA VI are at just under 3.3 million units... given 260 million dollars at an average of 79 dollars a unit.
Now what's more interesting here is if we stick with the 79 dollar price point for GTA and 59 for CP2077... take the rough number of 8 million units by 18 months that's some 444,444 units a month on average for CP2077. (Prices are different because getting the collectors editions was hard but MUCH more expensive.)
The sell through rate if the numbers are based on a 79 dollar game price is at just over 658 thousand pre orders a month for five months. If that were to keep up the average for 18 months... In that fantasy scenario the sell through totals would be over 11 million units.
I think it's fair to say financially speaking that Rockstar will do just fine... especially if they are taking in their cut of preorder money now. They are sure to eventually beat Star Citizen.
Interesting tidbit... that 59 dollars in 2019 when CP2077 started taking preorders is worth 77 dollars and change today according to google. So in reality these games have closer parity in price than I thought when I started this post.
I didn't have a destination in mind just a thought exercise.

Nobody expects GTA VI to do anything less than make the studio and publishers billions.

Just in todays economies... those are small numbers from a corporate standpoint when the big boys all talk in trillions.
Edit to add: And I just re read your post.. 5 day... fuuuggg... all of that math is meaningless now. I wonder how many people just won't eat and play GTA VI.
Another quick edit: A sell through rate of 131,646 units a DAY is insane... theoretically that would equate to just over 74 MILLION units in 548 days (the average number of days in 18 months.) At 79 dollars a unit would be... basically 5.7 billion...
There are approximately just over 95 million PS5 unit's that have been sold... so it's THEORETICALLY possible... but they would have to sell the PS5 edition to 76% of PS5 owners... not including a surge of new owners that there will be FOR this game.
Pardon me I need a nap. lol.
