NVIDIA’s quietly launched GeForce RTX 2060 with 12 GB of memory will presumably be a pretty big hit with cryptominers.

That’s according to a review of ZOTAC’s Gaming RTX 2060 Twin Fan 12GB shared by Hong Kong tech outlet PCM today, which includes a look at the card’s mining performance. As confirmed by PCM, the GeForce RTX 2060 (12 GB) is not locked down with a mining limiter like many of its Ampere siblings, allowing it to achieve substantially greater mining performance than cards such as the GeForce RTX 3060.

As PCM explains:

Since NVIDIA does not limit the mining performance of RTX 2060 (12 GB), even if 12GB GDDR6 will not be of great help to the mining performance, RTX 2060 (12 GB) also achieves a performance of 31.65MH/s, which is better than LHR’s RTX 3060 The 22.17MH/s is obviously high. Considering the values such as Power, RTX...

Talk about ambivalent emotions with this. On one hand I want to ROFL but on the other cry. Such a weird world we live in.

There were multiple reasons to buy it if you needed a card.

It isn't using 7nm so supply should be plentiful.
It's the 2060 Super with less memory bandwidth.
DLSS 2.3 makes this a massive upgrade from anything below the 1080 Ti.

The main thing now is if miners think they will recoup the investment before the PoS upgrade and all the mining power moving away from Ethereum. I don't think it's worth it at this point as profitability is going to nosedive instantly.

The 12GB memory makes it attractive for a number of professional applications. But not any more since any supply will immediately be funneled to miners, if not directly sold to them by nvidia, and the 2 cards per continent that actually make it into retail will be the prize of scalpers.

Well NVIDIA isn't selling these AFIK, just AIB.

However, prices, per this article, are already insane. Seriously, $785+ for one of these is ridiculous. Factor in scalpers and they'll go for the prices people were upset about when the 2080 TIs came out. As I said, it's hilarious it beats a 3060 but truly tragic these are really only made for one market when that price point comes into play.

PoS isn't going to even put a dent in mining. We'll move on to the next highest paying coin. And right now Flux is paying more than Ethereum. People don't stop mining when they break even. My rig has been going for 5 years. It's paid for itself 20x over.

And you are not any bit conscious about wasting resources? Or is it, if they let me do it it's on them? Whoever 'they' are.

Wasting what resources? My rigs costs me roughly $30-40 a month in electricity to produce roughly $500-750 worth of monthly profit.

My electricity is cheap, and my house is extremely efficient. All my mining cards are 4-5 years old.

I see no waste here.

I admit that I mine but I also invested in Solar to cover the costs when I do. The rig is paying it off and providing heat which also is reducing costs. However, come summer it's shut down due to summer heat and I don't want to overwork our AC, plus there's not enough panels to cover the usage of both. I started mining when I was mentioning to someone how I couldn't sell, or even give away, all my old GPUs(pre-COVID, a 2080 TI, 2080 Super, 1080 Ti) and they recommended I put them to use. I use my gaming rigs to mine when I'm at home and not gaming but they're primary use is still gaming or work.

If people wanna mine in their house with a spare rig - that isn't destroying much of anything. You could make the argument "Well if ~everyone~ did it", and that's true. But they don't, and there are an awful lot of things where if ~everyone~ did it it would be just as bad for the environment as mining.

It's the big industry scale mining factories that are really painful, those are the ones buying cards up in bulk, buying power plants just to run them, and have nothing other than a profit motive in mind.

Well, even 20-30 years ago there were campaigns urging people to turn off the lights when not using them. A spare rig running 24/7 for mining uses magnitudes more electricity than a light you forgot to turn off. If a few lights left on mattered, then surely we can't claim that home brew miners are non issue.

Frankly this is the exact attitude I'd expect from someone who is mining: Not thinking an inch further than their own short term gains.

Of course it's worth it for you since you get a profit from wasting electricity.
But in the bigger scheme it is a waste since that electricity is not producing anything of value. It's just turned directly into money.

Even if you'd claim that all you use for mining comes from renewable sources, the solar panels or turbines producing the electricity had to be manufactured at some point. The increased usage puts strain on the network, so that needs to be upgraded and maintained to accommodate the increased power usage.

It's not 'free' money, it's just not you who ends up paying for it, but everyone. And that is exactly why I think crypto mining is a self centered heinous activity.

In my case I still was going to get the panels regardless because our summertime bills were in excess of $200 just to keep the house at 74 degrees. For me its just an added benefit to have the means to generate revenue in the winter to pay for it with. Now that our local power company is getting gobbled up by an international conglomerate we're expecting a real s***show real soon and that too was incentive enough.

How dare I make money.

LOL

Get over yourself, dude. The world runs on electricity to make money. Our power generation is magnitudes better than it was 30+ years ago when turning off power hungry incandescent lights did matter.

Guess what else I do. I burn 20-40 gallons of gas every weekend in my boat that gets 2-4 miles per gallon. I tow it to the lake in my truck that gets 9-11 MPG. Then I bring that boat home and plug it in to a 60 AMP charger. THEN I'll get in my lifted Wrangler and go wheel off road for a whole day, burning yet more fuel. All those wasted resources, and the only thing produced was a massive smile on my face. AND GUESS WHAT! I paid for it all via mining.

What someone chooses to do with their money is their business as far as I’m concerned.

Do not make the mistake that because some people cared about light bulbs that everyone cares about light bulbs, or that there was some universal truth about light bulbs

noone cares about light bulbs, it's the energy wasted for nothing people care about in this case.

Have a look to see how much energy mining uses https://digiconomist.net/ethereum-energy-consumption

Where I live we are going to stop using nuclear plants for electricity by 2025 and noone knows yet how to make up for the deficit we are looking at.

For know the plan is to build gaspowered plants that exhausts tons of CO² if they can build them in time which seems more unlikely each passing day.
