From remakes to remasters, PC owners have good reason to be wary of console ports. It’s rare when one makes it over the tracks without being a convulsing mess, leaving players wondering what they just shelled out their hard-earned money for. Even rarer these days are for ones launched on less powerful consoles such as the Nintendo Switch. Well, some good news for fans of this 1995 Sega classic. First announced last October, the Panzer Dragoon: Remake was released last week to PC and then PS4 yesterday.

Synopsis of Reviews

Reviews for the PC version of this remake are currently sparse. However, DSOG has done its own testing using an...

I held off on getting the Switch version cuz I knew it was coming to PC. Ironic that now every current platform has it, except for XB1, when Panzer Dragoon 3 (Orta) was exclusive to original Xbox. I still play Panzer Dragoon 2 Zwei on my Saturn and PD Orta to this day. Orta looks awesome with XB1 back-compat. Waiting to see if they do a remake of 2. 3 doesn't even need a remake, it just needs a good port to PC.

I had no idea this was coming but I am happily shocked.
Yeah the game has had a Steam page up since last year, so it's been on my wishlist for a while. I think it was announced that it was coming to PC shortly after it was announced for Switch. What did surprise me is that it was also released on GOG, which is awesome.

I don't re-play PD1 anywhere near as much as I re-play 2 and 3 (framerate, graphics, and input response just don't compare to PD2, and PD2's multiple paths and dragon forms give it a lot more replayability), but I'm definitely looking forward to getting some time in with this remake.

I did have a game on the PS1 called Omega boost which shared a number of similar characteristics.
Thanks for sharing that video. That was a good look at Omega Boost. I definitely didn't know some of the information presented in there. That's a game I sadly did not get to spend much time with. I really need to rectify that one of these days.

Back then I was pretty hardcore with Gran Turismo so I was keen on seeing what they could do with this style game. Still got the original rom for it and fire it up everyone once in a while in an emulator. It's one of those games I'd always hoped would've gotten a modern remake. Pure button-mashing madness!

Gran Turismo is the only thing that makes me consider buying a PlayStation every generation.

I bought a PS4 Pro fully expecting at least one Gran Turismo. Every gen before this had two, not one. You can imagine how I felt when it was confirmed there will be no new GT within this generation.
Well, the sorta good news is that I think I heard there's one in the pipeline for PS5. I thought I read that somewhere in the last year. I used to love GT not just for racing but it was like having a virtual racing car encyclopedia accessible through a controller, that is once you had all the cars unlocked. Sometimes I'd spend hours just comparing stock specs of things. Good memories.

I wont lie I still fire up Gran Turismo 1 on a PS1 Emulator and relive my childhood haha. That game might not be pretty but it was still **** good.

I inherited an OG Xbox a long while back and seem to recall a Panzer Dragoon game. Of course the thing died shortly after I got it (probably why I got it for free).

Yeah, that was the 3rd game (4th in the series), Panzer Dragoon Orta, which to this day remains exclusive to the original Xbox. A fantastic and difficult game. I remember saying back when it came out that it did a good job of using that GeForce 3-based GPU. Looks really good now on XB1.

Now DF Retro covered it as part of their look at the Gran Turismo series:

Man, I loved that game. It had great graphics that were amazing for the time and a killer soundtrack to boot. I admit I had to use a Gameshark to beat the final level but totally worth it.

I finally played Omega Boost. Thought I had at least tried it back in the day, but nope, this was definitely my first time touching the game. Pretty f*ckin' sick game. I can feel the Panzer Dragoon DNA in it. It kind of reminds me of a cross between Panzer Dragoon and Zone of the Enders while evoking Macross. Got Game Over on the 6th level on this first run. Definitely gonna be revisiting this game a lot in the future. Still shocked I never knew about this game at all until you brought it to my attention. Awesome gameplay, awesome soundtrack (I was playing the USA version so that's the soundtrack I heard, although I did look up the Japanese and European versions of the intro movie to hear the different intro songs for those), awesome graphics, and yeah the game is pretty tough just like the PD games. Definitely not the kind of game you would expect Polyphony Digital to bust out. I'm playing on emulator but I need to get my hands on a copy. Thanks again for putting me on this game.

I had only found out about it by reading some magazine back in the day. I and my roommates used to get those PlayStation magazines and one of them mentioned it at the time and since I was such a fan of Gran Turismo I had to check it out. Polyphony even bragged that they got the PS1 to render the game at 60+ FPS which was impressive for the time. Glad you're enjoying it. I'd have to look around but I'm pretty sure I held onto my physical copy. Pretty sure I spent something like $40-45 on it at release(it was like only 1 of 5 that came in the store back then and I don't even remember which store it was anymore).

Although as DF pointed out (and as I saw myself), actual gameplay is 30fps while the rest of the game is 60fps. It's a very smooth, stable, consistent 30fps though, the kind of really nice 30fps performance we saw with games like Wipeout 1-3.

Those were special times. I like how consoles are continuing to get closer to PC performance but I'll always look back to that magical time when each console had a unique DNA that had its own strengths. From PS 1-3, Dreamcast, and N64 (w/ expansion pack), there were some seriously impressive things happening back then. Not intending to knock Xbox, but it took time for it to come into its own thing.
