PlayStation Studios Is Releasing a Game for Xbox

San Diego Studio has announced that its latest baseball title, MLB The Show 21, is launching on April 20, 2021 not only for the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4, but Microsoft’s Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One consoles as well. This is a peculiar surprise, as San Diego Studio is a first party that traditionally develops games exclusively for Sony systems under the SIE Worldwide Studios/PlayStation Studios banner. None of the previous MLB The Show games were released on a competing platform.

This is a sports game and huge revenue generator for Sony. It is stupid to believe that this is the start of a trend to bring exclusives to other platforms.

Yet it is bringing a first party game to another directly competing platform. The only way this doesn't signify a trend is if no other titles follow.

I got to wonder if the MLB/MLBPA forced Sony's hand when they renegotiated the games licensing. I'm sure MLB/MLBPA wouldn't want their officially licensed game to be relegated to one platform (whereas the NFL, NHL, NBA games are already multi-platform).

The word on the street is that Sony and San Diego Studio didn’t have any choice but to release MLB The Show 21 on multiple platforms due to licensing agreements.
 
The needs of the monies is more important than the needs of the console brands. Or something like that.
