Project Helix Could Cost Up to a Whopping $1,800, but May Also Offer Flagship-Tier PC Graphics Performance

So it's just a SOC with a gaming focus and a good bit of ram to help that happen. I am SHOCKED this is a projected future of gaming. No more worrying about a CPU/Motherboard/Ram/Storage/GPU. Now just buy Xb/Ps/N/At/Sm model 23 with all of the gaming built in, OR for a lower cost subscribe to this gaming service that has ALL of the games and you won't need more than a controller blue toothed to your TV.

Man, things sure have changed a-f*cking-lot since Atari 2600. Gawd I'm old. Never could have imagined things would turn out like this. The child version of me from decades ago would be so disappointed.

I dont see why it wouldnt make sense to just offer a gaming pc " console" MS is deep into hardware already. The xbox is a store and a service, why will they give a crap about where one runs it, and why would they be so worried if their optimal plataform to run their xbox stuff is open to others, it just makes their hardware much more valuable. If i was to see this, an open plataform, powerful optimized hardware, the equation is simple id probably check their store first, subscribe to their things etc, the value equation will be the value equation in the software/ service. Their controllers are quite great actually, i use it with my switch ( theres an adapter) but they should cut the crap already and give it full keyboard and mouse. Really near unbeatable value proposal for the hardware. It would already be if their black cube thing was like this, but instead they jacked the prices and kept it closed.

Steams black cube was never about maximizing profit. It was about proving a concept to the market. If a person or company can take a compatible system or SOC and throw the steam OS on it and go... Steam would love that.

Steam isn't apple... they have far fewer employees and make a small percentage of the money Apple makes.. but they also answer to themselves so can do cool stuff like the Steam machine.

It's the same reason they made the half life games. They wanted to prove a tech and tell a story.

I would.love to see them iterate and improve their engine more. It would mean more half life or portal like games!

right. the end game for steam is to just publish the OS & let the OEM's pre-install it

MS still considers Xbox as a 'platform' which means first party hardware/services play a key role.
for MS the end game is cloud streaming and/or cloud hosting for online play & digital infrastructure

Well i meant the xbox whatever, the one that is black beh .
I think it would be wise to open things up, i cant imagine that have a negative effect at all i dont know..

I remember at one point it was rumoured that the Series X (the black, cube Xbox) was going to allow Steam games on it - I was so excited at that possibility. It's a great piece of hardware (minus the proprietary memory expansion), but its lack of software was really hindering.

Not that the PS5 ended up being much better for software, tbh, but it had a lot of the JRPG series I was looking for.

So far I'm liking the changes/direction XBox is heading in under Sharma, I'm hoping they do a 'open' console (full access like a PC) and a 'subsidized' console (Xbox, Battle.net, Epic, official partners-only storefronts). The more digital storefronts, the better, imo. And if MS makes the Xbox store compelling, I'd purchase from them over Steam.

Besides the clunkiness/bugginess of the interface; I like the direction MS is taking with the XBOX mode on PC, and I like how easily it pulls all my games from different storefronts into its library. I wish SteamOS did that without the need for 3rd party software (and resultant compatibility issues). If the next Xbox uses a superior version of that interface, I'd be on board.

imo, this is the reason that MS is still keeping Xbox alive

what is good for Xbox UI is also good for windows PC as a whole in terms of responsiveness & usability etc. !!
