Last week, CD PROJEKT RED revealed that Cyberpunk 2077 would be delayed until September because the developer needed more time to fix bugs and perform additional play-testing. The reason could be more complicated than that, however.

During a recent discussion, Polish insider Borys Niespielak claimed that the graphically intense RPG was actually pushed back because the Xbox One lacks the power to run the game as CD PROJEKT RED intended. The performance of Cyberpunk 2077 on Microsoft’s weaker console is “extremely unsatisfactory,” he said.

Fans are now (rightfully) worried about a potential downgrade in graphical quality. When The Witcher 3 launched, there was...

But as CD PROJEKT RED explains, the game wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for Sony and Microsoft’s revenue streams.

I call BS on the assertion that the game wouldn't be possible without Sony and Microsoft.

Plenty of ambitious open world RPG style FPS games have been developed as PC exclusives, including one of the best in the entire genre, the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series. And the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series was released before the current PC gaming renaissance when PC game sales are booming more than ever....

Dial the OG Xbone down to 720p and call it a day

Yar, might have to do it. Sometimes you just can't run at a fabled 900p.

The base Xbox One is my biggest concern with Xbox titles going forward - I know MS has said they won't have any Series X exclusives until a couple of years in (2022 iirc), and I can't help but feel forcing these cross-gen games to run on original One hardware is going to bite them in the ***.

Why do they need to down grade the graphic ability at all, why not let consoles run at a lower fidelity and let the PC's rock on? Heck building for PC there will be people that need to turn the game down anyway!

I imagine their big breadwinner are the consoles, so they want to ensure their quality is as good as possible. Still, remember when devs would launch a stellar PC title first and then eventually port the game to consoles?

Stop it you're going to make me cry!!

CDPR used to be one of those companies. I thought they still were.

I think that sweet Witcher 2 console money changed their POV.

Truth be told, I'm not terribly bothered by a 'developed for console' mentality when it comes to graphics - consoles are powerful enough now I don't think they're that much of a hindrance anymore. But it's the tendency for more simplistic designs or control schemes designed around a gamepad. Skyrim's vanilla UI being an example of this.

If CDPR released a bad *** title on PC first. THEN released that title onto Console I think it would see a buying EXPLOSION once it hit console as long as it had good press on PC. The reverse is almost never true... only because it happens so often and is so often a lackluster experience for PC users.

You mean a game so massively successful on PC that the company folded after a couple iterations? They want to make something popular and profitable that has really high production values, so they need some console money.

GSC Game World did not shut down because of their financial state. They were solvent and had the money to finish S.T.A.L.K.E.R.2 which they were working on at the time. Their concern was that with the resources they had it would take too long to bring to market, at which time it would be outdated.

Part of the problem was that the founder and CEO was a little bit of a control freak and insisted they create their own engine from scratch, in a time when developers were more and more relying on 3rd party engines, to speed time to market.

Normally they would have raised more money to speed up development, but in the market in the years after the financial collapse, it was not as easy to raise funding as it had been in the past. Then the founder and CEO had some personal issues, possibly stemming from attempting to raise funding from the mob, and decided to step away and suspend operations.

For the record they reopened in 2014, and started fresh on a new S.T.A.L.K.E.R 2 in 2018 using the Unreal4 engine (something theys hould have done along). They were targeting a 2021 release date, but I haven't heard anything in a while, so who knows if it is even still in development. The website is still up though... Last twitter update was from May of 2019.
