Smartglasses, an arguably niche but rapidly advancing category of wearable devices that allows users to interact with digital content while keeping their eyes on the real world, will largely replace smartphones as the world's primary computing platform by the end of the decade, according to the latest word from Mark Zuckerberg, co-founder, chairman, and CEO of Meta.

Zuckerberg also predicted we'd be living and working in the 'metaverse.' 🤷‍♂️ No doubt, we'll certainly see an uptick and adoption for sure, but replacement? Methinks his predictions are too aggressive.

Pass.

I have a pretty strong optical prescription, and even I don't like wearing things on my face. (which is why I always wear contacts)

And I'm apparently not alone. Not wanting to wear glasses seems to be the primary reason 3D TV remains a fad to this day.

Yeah I try to wear my contacts as much as possible, cuz wearing glasses is annoying. And yeah, wearing glasses for 3D was some real sh1t. My parents have a Samsung HDTV with active 3D, the dang glasses needed batteries, and the 3D effect f*cked with my eyes. Gave me hella eye fatigue, and sometimes headaches. And you can't wear glasses when you are already wearing glasses. I mean I tried it a few times, that was stupid. So contacts were basically a requirement for using those 3D glasses. A friend of mine that is into PSVR, when he got the PS5 version, he had to special-order custom lenses so he could use the VR headset without his glasses, since he couldn't wear glasses and wear the VR set.

A friend had a TV with passive 3D, which agreed with my eyes much better. Still though you have to wear glasses. That's why I appreciated the 3DS having glasses-free 3D. It was kinda rough in the old 3DS cuz you had to hold the system in the right position at the right distance, but the New 3DS had eye tracking and produced a better 3D effect that was also a lot more convenient, cuz let's face it, with a handheld system you're not gonna be sitting absolutely still like a statue. Some games used it well, but most of the time it was a gimmick, a novelty, and on the old 3DS, turning on the 3D would also incur a performance hit (same deal with 3D on the PS3, where for example a 60fps game would now be 30fps).

I also can't stand wearing headphones for very long. I'm a speaker guy. Seems like everyone and their brother only does PC audio through some kind of headset. Not me.

You don't use the metaverse; the metaverse uses you.
That I do not doubt.

Not for me, already have enough eye trouble, don't need more, tried contacts, did not work for me b4 my current issues, doubt it will now.

I already nneed smallish frames as otherwise my glasses would be too heavy (left eye is at -10.50, right -14.50), I woul dnot be able to avoid the blind spots in my vision if the image is fixed to my glasses

I'd say, primarily, these aren't likely going to be for us so much as they're going to be slapped on to the youngers. I could see some real world excellent use cases though. It's not going to be in the first few generations, but imagine having glasses on that could automatically adjust magnification depending on your needs. Something like close up for menu's in a restaurant, later while driving home at night, adjusting for further distance, perhaps even augmenting the night road. The possibilities are really there. It's just going to take the tech to move far enough along to be real.

I have gotten used to headphones on the PC due to the years of use.

I tend to prefer most games with headphones. At least FPS titles. Especially competitive ones, as it allows me to localize sounds better. (Though I haven't exactly played lots of competitive FPS titles in the last decade.

Back in the day in Counter-Strike when I was playing a ridiculous number of hours per week, I could aim and shoot at footsteps blindfolded if I wanted to. (This often resulted in accusations of hacking which was rather amusing)

Some games I do prefer to play with speakers though. Sid Meier's Civilization is one of those.

For music I definitely like my speakers better. But as I share a single family home with my wife, the kid and (several months a year) my mother-in -law, there are rarely opportunities where I can just blast my music at volumes I enjoy without worrying about bothering others. So often I wind up using headphones there too. :/

Growing up is fun.

When I was young I lived in apartments, and had to worry about the subwoofer bothering the neighbors. I dreamt of the day I would be old enough to have my own single family home and do whatever I want and not have to worry about anyone else. I didn't picture it turning out like this :p

And it's not like I have received complaints about things being too loud. It's just that I was raised right, to be aware of the people around me, and not be a jerk and bother them. (Sadly way too many people seemingly weren't)
