Square Enix has revealed the final title for Project Athia: Forspoken. Originally announced back in 2020, the other-wordly RPG is being developed by Luminous Productions. Forspoken is a narrative-driven adventure set in the land of Athia.

Luminous Productions’ members include veterans from the Final Fantasy XV team. Forspoken also features talents from film and television. The writing team is led by Gary Whitta, whose writing credits include Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Star Wars Rebels, and numerous The Walking Dead video games.

Really proud to reveal that I led a crack team of A-list writers from the worlds of film, tv, games, and fantasy literature who helped create this immense new universe for...

Whitta was one of the better writers for PCGamer back in the day. I'll have to watch for this one.

I had my hopes up for a minute, then saw that it has a fixed character, so not what I'd call a proper rpg. Shame. also those movements seem ridiculous. Too bad because the graphics actually looks good, assuming what we saw is not all pre-rendered lies.

I'm definitely curious about it. I mostly like what I've seen so far.

I didn't know custom character creation was a requirement to be a "proper" RPG. I guess all those hundreds of games released without character creation should be referred to as a different genre.

By that definition Horizon Zero Dawn and Tomb Raider are also RPGs,

I draw the line at character creator, if it doesn't have one it's not an RPG, that's what I think, and I really don't care if anyone approves my standards or not.

I can support that.

but playing Devils Advocate - with the exception of the MMO titles - Final Fantasy (and many JRPGs) titles don’t have character creators (apart from letting you use a custom name). Same with some western titles, like KOTOR and Mass Effect

Definitely a to each their own since as games continue to expand upon various types there could easily be sub categories for each. It's never mattered to me whether or not a game had a character creator but I can understand why it's a desirable feature as well since that level of customization can lend itself for a deeper level of immersion.

For me, the bigger focus is how the game performs and if I like it overall. From first person shooters to fantasy/sci-fi RPGs I've seen a lot crossover types the lines do get a bit blurry which is which sometimes. Broader categories names are beginning to get muddled as time goes by since many a developer will try to do something a bit different in order to make their mark.

I don't remember Kotor it was so long ago, but Mass Effect definitely has a character creator, where you can customize the character and choose a backstory. Although I would only qualify ME1 as an RPG, ME2, and 3 are more action games. So not all that has a character creator is an RPG, but I can't imagine an RPG without one.

Horizon Zero Dawn is an ARPG, yes. Tomb Raider is Action-Adventure.
