Feeling old yet? This week happens to mark the 20th anniversary of Steam (est. September 12, 2003), and Valve is celebrating the event by gifting the platform's earliest members with a new badge that they can use to advertise their many years of service. According to a comparison image shared by the SteamDB account, the new badge features the classic, olive green color scheme that Valve used in the earlier versions of its Steam client—something that has since been replaced by a modern UI and what some say is a more pleasant blue.

Good gawd, has it been that long already? In my Steam profile, the badge showing how long I have had a Steam account says 18 years. HL2 was the first game I bought that used Steam. I got it not too long after it came out, but I don't exactly remember when. I don't even remember what my life was like at the time. I do remember being really pissed off, cuz I had Comcast back then, which meant constant service outages, which meant I couldn't play my brand-new copy of HL2 reliably for a good few days after I got it. I had heard the bellyaching about Steam when it first showed up. I joined those complainers after that experience. Never been a fan of having to be online to play a single-player game. Steam has gotten a lot better over the years though, and the offline mode is actually decent these days. Out of all the programs out there that are required for launching games from the respective storefronts, Steam is the one that pisses me off the least.

EDIT: It is VVEERRYY weird seeing people talk about how Steam is older than they are.

Man I remember when steam came out. I was a PC gaming curmudgeon even then saying I prefer physical games...

My PC doesn't even have an DVD/CD/ hell externally accessible drive of any sort other than adding one via USB.

All of my games are over the wire now for installation. I'd be really annoyed if someone released a game ONLY on physical media today. LOL.

Yeah, I think I only jumped on board maybe 10+ years ago. I used to be a physical-only copy person and enjoyed having the extra packaging. Back in my Atari days, I'd stack the boxes around my room. These days, I'm plenty happy for digital only unless it's something really special that comes with cool swag but even then they usually cost so much that I don't do them. Btw Disney has a cool collectors edition for its upcoming Gargoyles Remastered Edition (Sega Genesis). I saw it on the weekend.

Sadly I only got into using GOG maybe around 5 years ago but I've updated most of my library as much as I can with them. Epic/Rockstar are mostly a no-go unless they have an exclusive that I don't want to wait for. I've yet to do a humble bundle but maybe someday.

I still mostly am, at least on console, but on PC I got used to years of "community demos" even before games started having official digital releases, so I got used to having a digital library. I seem to mind it a lot less on PC as a result. GOG handles things the right way, with a DRM-free digital library you can do whatever you want with. Physical games don't even come with manuals anymore. And once the industry switched over to optical discs, retail packaging for games was just the CD or DVD case, no fancy box. So grabbing physical copies isn't really anything special these days. Nevertheless, as someone who continues to play games and systems decades later, I like the idea of a fully-offline game that I can play long after download servers have been shut down. That's what pisses me off about Switch games where the whole game isn't on the cartridge (cuz devs are cheap and don't wanna spring for the largest-size cartridges). When you buy such a game, you have to download the rest of the data. Good luck doing that 20 years from now.

Another thing is that throughout my life, I depended heavily on borrowing games from friends and family. You can't do that with digital copies of games, except with GOG games (where a friend can just give you a full copy). I guess Steam family/library sharing is sort-of a way to borrow games in the modern digital age. That has been pretty handy. When my friends started getting digital console games, I got pissed cuz it meant I wouldn't be able to borrow those games when they were done with them. Well as it so happens, my friends just started letting me borrow their consoles. Worked out well when I don't have the console to begin with (as is often the case, cuz I don't usually grab consoles until late in their generation, or sometimes even after their generation). If console exclusives keep coming to PC though, I won't ever need to borrow or buy a console again.

Same. Most of the time their cost can't be justified. I'd buy a lot more of them if their prices were reasonable. Too late now though. I've gotten addicted to years of super discounts for games on Steam and the like. About 2 decades worth of sales. It's gotten to the point where now I consider $10-$15 a normal price for a game, with $20 being a bit expensive, and a good chunk of my purchases are below $10. That doesn't just go for PC storefronts, but non-Nintendo console games too. Every PS4 game I have (most of which are physical copies) I spent $10 or less on, except for maybe one. All were bought brand-new.

I've yet to do a humble bundle but maybe someday.
I don't do the game bundle subscription, but I do have an account to take advantage of the normal sales that they have, same as the other digital game stores. If I find a Steam game on there for cheap and it's not that low anywhere else, I'll grab it from there. I do have friends who do the subscription though, and sometimes they'll get games they don't want, or already have. So they toss me the codes and I get some free games.

Ah yes, I forgot that game is getting a remaster: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1928020/Gargoyles_Remastered/
Might this be what you are referring to: https://limitedrungames.com/collections/all-games/products/gargoyles-collectors-edition-genesis
Or this? https://limitedrungames.com/products/limited-run-531-gargoyles-remastered-collectors-edition
Limited Run Games always got some crazy physical editions. There's a lot of stuff I wanted to buy from them over the years but never really felt like spending on the money on. Luckily I have friends who do.

Same here. I have used them pretty much exclusively since, with the occasional purchase outside of Steam here and there.

Yeah I think HL2 was my first too... even though it came on a bunch of discs it had to be activated on Steam. 2003? 2004?

Yea I've only been with them for 16 years. I've been with ATT wireless for almost... 30... it's crazy.

I was with Century Link for 10-15 until they started incrementally jacking up my bill every 60 days or so. After a year it was about a $300 difference and then I switched to Comcast and have been mostly happy for the last 5-10. Ironically, I'm going through ATT for our wireless right now but we'll see how much longer that will go. Been 2-3 years with them and mostly a good experience.

It took some time for me to really warm up to Steam but I've been happy since. I was really happy when I finally getting some things on GoG. It just feels nice knowing the game is mine and I don't have to have internet to play it.
