The USB Promoter Group believes that the first USB4 products will arrive by the end of 2020.

The specification is in its 0.7 version and will be finalized this summer.

USB4 is based on Intel’s Thunderbolt protocol. It provides up to 40 Gbps of bandwidth, which is double that of USB 3.2.

Being based on the Thunderbolt 3 technology and offering up to 40 Gbps bandwidth, USB4 promises to be more than that. In fact, so much more that the USB Promoter Group is considering a new logotype and branding scheme. The current one is already complex enough, so expect some kind of simplification on that front. Meanwhile, USB4 will be backwards compatible with existing USB Type-C devices.

This reminded me that I ought to wait a bit further until my next build. My first I7 build was one of the 1st gens with PCIe 3.0/USB 3.0/SATA III so it would be somewhat poetic to do my next with PCIe 4.0/USB4, and whatever the latest NVMe is at that point.
