Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has revealed that Xbox Game Pass now has over eighteen million subscribers. The service has gained roughly three million new members since September. To add even further perspective on those numbers, the service had reached a subscriber base of over ten million back in April 2020. These numbers break down to roughly one million new subscribers per month since then. Xbox Game Pass is proving that it can still draw in new subscribers via console, mobile, and PC markets.

Not a huge fan of the client on PC, but it has gotten better. For awhile there, it was hit or miss if a game would actually install or get stuck in a download loop. Currently playing through Wasteland 3 and it did one full re-download about 15 hours in. Not sure if there was an update and that's how it handles updates or if something got borked.

Still, content-wise it has been decent. Got the kid and myself subscribed for a couple of years each, and it seems like there's always something new and worth playing on there.

I couldn't justify it even for $1. It's a mess, failed installs, leftover data, overfilled system drive, slow downloads. Just a highlight reel.

Yeah but it's not quite the same experience. Not the same games, MS Store makes a mess of your PC storage, many games just don't work right, no mod support, etc...

It's not bad when you can get it for $1... but I wouldn't quite call XBGP for the PC ready for Prime Time either.
Not every game has a PC version and it is ultimately up to the publishers if they want their games also available on the PC version.

Gears of War 4 is the only game that ever gave me storage issues. For some reason with every update it wanted to download the entire game again, all 100+ GB of it. Other than that, no issues picking where I want to install or cleaning up after it.

I have not run into a game that does not work "right," however you define that. The games that were released using the UWP framework, like Rise of the Tomb Raider or Quantum Break, I never played on the MS storefront.

Mod support is available for some games, but I agree this is a problem.

My biggest issue with getting games through Game Pass or the MS Store is them hiding all the files by default and needing to take ownership of the location every time. I also hate that they use cryptic names for everything. What are you trying to hide, exactly? The tech savvy are going to find everything and document it.

Download speed is also an issue. They always get interrupted for no apparent reason, and there is no option to prevent or set a throttling limit if you're doing something else on your PC.

I would never sign up for something like this.

My tastes are too specific to just pay for a service and get random games I may or may not care about.

I just went through the Xbox Game Pass title list for PC and saw only 3 titles I was ever interested in. (Wolfenstein Youngbloods, The Outer Worlds, Microsoft Flight Simulator) Two of them I already own, and one of those wound up sucking. (Youngbloods). I mean, Day of the Tentacle is on there as well. I bought that and liked it back in - what - 1993? If I ever feel the need to play it again, I can always fire up ScummVM.

This is hardly worth $10 per month.

That, and Microsoft really failed with using the "Xbox" branding for anything on the PC. They should never have created an Xbox app, or mentioned Xbox anywhere in Windows. Xbox makes me think of Console, and Console represents everything I hate about games. I consider it an insult to have the name "Xbox" on anything on my PC. I'm not like those cretins that play on Console, and I want no reminders that consoles exist ever in my house and especially not on my PC.

As a cretin who occasionally plays on a console, I also didn't find anything worthwhile on the service. I've tried maybe a dozen games in my 3 months of using it. (Got two months for free with my ryzen cpu then a year later signed up for the $1 month) And of all the games I only finished two: Outer Worlds and Forza Horizon. I was interested in flight simulator but no as much to keep paying a monthly fee for a game that I might run once every fullmoon. I'd rather buy it when it gets cheap, or if it doesn't as is MS's m.o. well, c'est la vie.

I'm not targeting individuals as cretins. There are always the good and the bad apples.

Every time I even look at someone playing anything on a console, however, it always seems to look like this comic from the Oatmeal:

Consoles really do seem to bring out the lowest common denominator.
