Surprised they don't have supply agreements in place already, unless the suppliers told them to take a hike unless they pay an updated cost.
 
I have a feeling someone dropped the ball in getting contracts in place early enough and by the time a decision was made it was too late.

I dont know about that. When the average pay for a steam employee is in the tens of millions... I suspect suppliers forced a renegotiation.

-Yeah, possible the cost of backing out of the agreement was less than the RAM companies stood to make on selling an equivalent amount of RAM at market value, so the maths mathed and they would rather pay a penalty to valve than lose out on that sweet AI revenue.
