OC3D is reporting that Apex Legends already has 100,000 concurrent players on Steam. That may not seem huge, but it’s still impressive, being that the game launched just a few days ago on Steam.

When Apex Legends launched last year on Origin, it quickly gained a massive amount of players. In its first eight hours, it gained roughly one million players. Two weeks later, there were two million players. This achievement is a testament to the popularity of free-to-play, battle-royale games.

Always cool to see games do well on the PC platform.

Battle Royale always held little interest to me personally tho.
That said, I did play the **** out of UT, but I guess that doesnt really count...as a BR..

I dread seeing these games do well. Because the better they do the more developers and publishers try to mimic them and that means less actual single player games with a story and a narrative.

I find myself playing this game often whenever I have the time. They did a really good job with this game.

If they make good money with them they have more funds for the single player games that have a smaller audience (in theory anyways) and they can take more time to better test and complete them.

If they made this game more like Titanfall I'd be all over it. It otherwise just looks like the same copy pasta everybody else is doing these days and has since day 1. Unfortunately the success of this combined with EA's sabotaging of Titanfall 2 probably means we'll never see another Titanfall game again.

I love Apex and am super happy it's now on Steam. First thing I did was uninstall Origin when it launched on Steam. I've found the game to have more depth than other Battle Royal games... I've already put a couple hundred hours into it and likely will put another couple hundred in before I lay it out to pasture.

Lastman standing kind of is the modern battle royale. Except you could only have 32 max players in a UT game vs 100 in current BR games.

Except funds made on games isn't the developers alone. It is possible to make a battle royale in 2 years, and it makes money in its entire lifecycle. Investors will want that instead of a single player AAA game that takes 4-5 years and only makes money on the initial sale.

It's why Konami abandoned AAA video game development for pachinko. Despite making more money in the end the company wanted to see a quicker ROI instead of having to 5+ years for a bigger paycheck. That shortsightedness is probably what is bringing them back from just re-releasing old games to cash in on nostalgia, though I have little faith that the company will ever be as great as it once was.
