Quantum Break, a Remedy Joint.
Another game that supports my "graphics plateaued in 2016" claim, game looks fantastic and really could have been released anytime within the past couple years. In order to get it to run on the original XBone Remedy was apparently ahead of the curve and used extremely aggressive upscaling to hit 30FPS, but most modern video cards can run the game pretty well at native resolution these days (but even then the game will heavily underperform equivalent modern titles).
Anyhow, the IP is Microsoft's property so technically the game isn't part of the Remedy Expanded Universe, but basically all of the narrative elements have apparently be captured in a legally distinct way in Alan Wake 2 (so I've heard...) and Control.
As an actual game, QB feels like the first draft for Control. The gunplay is tight but flat. The powers are fun but the game can be too stingy with them. The game is skewed way too heavily towards narrative and exposition, with brief bursts of somewhat exciting but also a little frustrating gameplay. Powers are on individual cooldowns and have limited uses before they have to recharge which often makes simply doing the boring cover shooter thing the most efficient way to clear a room, which isn't fun. I want to use cool powers, not play a subpar gears of war game for 5 minutes every 30 minutes.
Where the game really seems to live or die for folks is its episodic content. I personally find the episodes between missions fun in a filmed for TV kind of way, but HOLY **** are these god **** videos long. Like comically long. Like even if you like the story and the characters and the reactivity to your choices, you want to get back to playing the game not watching god **** 10-15 minute videos between missions. They are skippable, but it feels like you're missing out on a ton of story if you do.
Anyhow game is fun, has that trademark Remedy charm/style/presence, looks fantastic, allows for some narrative branching and I would say is generally worth checking out nowadays if you like what Remedy does.
Just expect something that feels almost like a modern Remedy game with some unpolished edges, and absurdly long cutscenes.
