The BEAUTIFUL GPU connector that keeps on giving

I'm not so sure its criminal to run 850w PSUs with 5090s.......Ive used a few 850w PSUs with higher end GPU'S.

Seasonic Vertex GX 850
7800x3d + 4090 (Asus strix OC) couldn't get above 750w draw and that was simply hammering furmark and cpu burner (in furmark)

Was closer to 650w when just gaming

MSI MAG A850GL
Core ultra 5 225 + Tuf 5090
725w max power draw using the above programs
Gaming was around 675w

MSI MPG A850GS
9800x3d + Tuf 5090

775w max power draw with 675-700w while gaming.

The transient load spikes in the axt 3.0 and 3.1 allows for short bursts of higher gpu draw.

Oh and all the above PSUs had native 12vhpwr connections to the GPU. No issues with meltdowns and I swapped gpus from system to system.

This article was one of the reasons why I never went too insane with PSU's

Yeah there's no need.

Really, it's as simple as adding up power-consuming components - GPU TDP, CPU TDP, another 100W for the the board / lights / fans / spinning drives if present, and you're at your number.

The only exception is Intel 14th-gen and older, if you're letting power limits go uncapped. Then, you can hit up to 350W at the socket (typically closer to 300W), and that pushes you just into considering 1000W instead of 850W. Same if perhaps you go with the latest i9 or top-end AMD SKU with 16 cores. The eight-core variants as you've noticed simply cannot pull that much power, topping out well under 200W.

Glad that I went to the extra effort to have a fan nearby the connector in each of my builds, and also undervolt, along with limiting FPS to keep power draw at a minimum. Not a cure, but it seems to be doing the trick w/o getting extra hardware. One rig is a daily runner (5800X3D) also used for gaming, while the other (9800X3D) is used almost exclusively for gaming, but both have added fans in the cases directly on the GPU and connector to keep all temps as low as possible.
