I'm not so sure its criminal to run 850w PSUs with 5090s.......Ive used a few 850w PSUs with higher end GPU'S.
Seasonic Vertex GX 850
7800x3d + 4090 (Asus strix OC) couldn't get above 750w draw and that was simply hammering furmark and cpu burner (in furmark)
Was closer to 650w when just gaming
MSI MAG A850GL
Core ultra 5 225 + Tuf 5090
725w max power draw using the above programs
Gaming was around 675w
MSI MPG A850GS
9800x3d + Tuf 5090
775w max power draw with 675-700w while gaming.
The transient load spikes in the axt 3.0 and 3.1 allows for short bursts of higher gpu draw.
Oh and all the above PSUs had native 12vhpwr connections to the GPU. No issues with meltdowns and I swapped gpus from system to system.
