A Real Talk Discussion about DLSS 5: 3 Good Things, 5 Bad Things, and 4 Questions For You

And if you reverse that: If DLSS 5 can make visuals undistinguishable from full path tracing, then it would reduce or completely negate the need for full path tracing.

So we have gone from faking lighting with baked in lighting, to wanting real Ray Tracing, to wanting real Path Tracing, to wanting non-rasterized games, to now coming back to not wanting any of that at all but faking the lighting again? Full circle?

How strange to me.
 
I've seen a few more games with it on Youtube and it seems experimental to me so far. It can't do all that much in older games. Makes them look slightly nicer but nothing you can't live without. Nice bonus if you have the hardware but not enough to crave it and buy an RTX card if you have a Radeon or Arc card, for example. It will surely get better in future generations. Right now it's just an excuse to revisit and replay older games.

I'm just interested in the result not the means.

I always thought that for 90% of games baked in lighting made more sense. Most lights in most scenes are static so full real time path tracing would be a waste of resources.
 
We could do super resolution... (4k image downscaled to 1440P when monitors were too expensive for my budget.)
I've been using nVidia DSR for downscaling for years now. I use 4x scale factor with smoothness set to 0%. When I was on a 16:10 1920x1200 monitor this yielded the 16:10 version of 4K, 3840 x 2400 res. Then afterwards with my 1440p monitors I've done 5K (5120 x 2880 with 4x scale factor) and 4K (using DL 2.25x). I use downscaling whenever I got the GPU headroom for it. With my aging system that's less and less often these days (for the big triple AAA releases), but it still sees use with older games and less demanding games.

I've rarely needed to use DLSS so far though. Usually I have performance headroom for DLAA. Doom TDA was the first game where I felt I had to use DLSS upscaling (I used Quality mode). Well technically the first game where I was really forced to use it was Portal RTX (I think I needed Balanced or Performance mode at the time). Also needed it for Indiana Jones and the Great Circle (Quality mode). HL2 RTX even with DLSS it runs like @ss. I'll get around to that one in the future. A future where the PC market isn't being absolutely f*cked in a brutal gangbang from all angles.

DLSS 5 I just haven't really paid attention to at all.

So I don't think DLSS 5 is meant to replace Path Tracing or better lighting technologies in games. Rather, as a companion to them. With better inputs, you get better DLSS 5 quality outputs. Which is how I understood it to work, as I stated in the video.

In other words, this isn't going to "fake" lighting, or replace it.

That definitely sounds like a typically selfish Nvidia "recommendation". They don't care about giving the best to their customers. They just want current 5090 owners to get hooked on DLSS5 so bad that they won't mind paying $10K for 6090 whenever it arrives.

Also, anyone who has followed Nvidia's typical generational improvements progress knows that Nvidia will debut some new "feature" toward the tail end of a generation and that generation will have horrible fps with that feature turned on and then the next generation has somewhat normal and playable framerates for that feature. In other words, this is Nvidia's modus operandi. Keep fleecing existing customers by introducing new enhancements that require more and more expensive hardware and keep them hooked on the promise that "someday" photorealistic realism will be achieved.

Hint: No, it's never gonna be achieved because Nvidia will then run out of things to promise. This is going to go on for decades unless AMD or Intel or a new player break this vicious cycle of feeding the hungry beast with the bottomless pit for a stomach.

Gawd I wish there was some real, serious competition for nVidia out there.
