  1. InWin Shows Off New Kit at CES

I like Inwin's OEM lineup. Much of their retail stuff is a bit...gaudy.
  2. EA Remasters-Crysis Anyone?

I never played Crysis. I got Crysis 2 in a humble bundle, and it was horrible. Couldn't finish it. I've heard that the original and C3 were better, but my experience has made me hesitant to try them.
  3. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Final Trailer Released

The trailer was so boring to me. It really only was good if you were emotionally involved in the story line that started with 7, and was eagerly anticipating the final conclusion. At least it confirmed what I suspected - that Kylo and Rey would end up working together at some point against "a...
  4. Another Day, Another Windows 10 Update Gone Bad

Just keep in mind, that Windows 10 is installed on just shy of 1 billion computers. If an update effected just 1% of systems, that would be a million computers affected. Statistically, not an issue, but by sheer volume of numbers, plenty of people who can make the issue seem bigger than it is...
  5. Another Day, Another Windows 10 Update Gone Bad

In other news - another day, another OSX update gone bad: https://www.forbes.com/sites/ewanspence/2019/10/08/apple-macos-catalina-broken-update-mac-imac-macbook-pro-fix-mistake/#6b2700161035
  6. Windows Account Creation Survey

Due to some conversations floating about the web regarding account creation on Windows 10, I wanted to start some data collection on the Windows 10 Account Creation issue. I've posted this on the "other" forum, but thought I might reach some additional people here. Specifically, some people...
  7. Prepare to Pay At Least $600 for Intel's Core i9-9900KS

And, using the "lower end" X570 and Z390 motherboards, that difference erases the price premium for the AMD boards. That is my point.
  8. AMD Launching Ryzen 5 3500 on October 5 for Around $155, According to Retailer

I'm liking the release of the lower-end Ryzen 5's. They'll provide a good upgrade over my current system, with room to upgrade later on. For too long, to get any sort of appreciable performance increase I would have had to purchase top-end components. Glad that computer tech has finally...
  9. What Window Manager Do You Use?

On my FreeBSD installations, I like to use XFCE. It does what is needed, with minimal setup. Lots of the BSD guys like to use basic window managers like openbox and manually install all the widgets, gadgets, and the like. I may play around with that some day, but for now, just getting the...
  10. New Details on AMD's "Big" Navi 12 and "Small" Navi 14 Leak

What does "a generation behind" even mean? Sure, the top-end Nvidia card gets higher fps in games, but that just means it is faster, not generationally advanced. If the feature set is comparable, and the price to performance ratio is similar, I don't see how that could be a generational gap...
  11. Prepare to Pay At Least $600 for Intel's Core i9-9900KS

Don't have to go on just what you read in threads, easy enough to compare prices. Here's some apple-to-apple comparisons of ASUS offerings At the Egg: ASUS Prime Z390-P - $149.99 ASUS Prime X570-P - $169.99 ASUS TUF Z390-Plus Gaming (Wi-Fi) - $169.99 ASUS AM4 TUF Gaming X570-Plus (Wi-Fi)...
  12. AMD's 3rd Gen Ryzen Threadripper CPUs May Require New Motherboards

When I built my current main system, I purchased an ASUS Z68 motherboard, and paired it with a Sandy Bridge Pentium G850. A few years later, I dropped in a Xeon E3 1245 v2 (Ivy Bridge). Being able to get two generations out of the same motherboard was nice. A few years ago, I wanted a cheap...
  13. Prepare to Pay At Least $600 for Intel's Core i9-9900KS

Agreed. Let me state my less filtered opinion then: It is nice to think that Intel's over-priced top-end processor is only ~$600 instead of the $1000 it was 10 years ago. At that price it's not competitive with AMD's offerings, but those who feign outrage at the price can use a little...
  14. Prepare to Pay At Least $600 for Intel's Core i9-9900KS

For historical consideration, the Core 2 Extreme processors were released at around $1000 over 12 years ago. While the price of the 9900KS seems extreme, especially given the current competition, for Intel's highest-end consumer processor, historically it isn't that expensive.
  15. AMD's 3rd Gen Ryzen Threadripper CPUs May Require New Motherboards

Can't see how this is totally a bad thing. We are talking about high-end productivity systems, and while being able to drop a new chip in essentially a 3-generation old platform is a nice idea, refreshing with a completely new system, or at least a new motherboard can be a good thing. As long...
